The Carolina Hurricanes scored more goals against the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series than they’ve allowed in five total meetings with Boston this season. Ditto for Game 2. So of course heading into Friday’s Game 3, Bruins vs Hurricanes odds show Carolina as … an underdog?

Apparently, bookmakers believe some home cooking is all Boston needs to solve the season-long mystery that has been the Hurricanes. The Bruins and their fans better hope those oddsmakers are accurate, or summer vacation is going to start super early in New England.

Slap Shots

  • Carolina forwards Nino Niederreiter and Sabastian Aho each netted two goals in Game 2, while defensemen Tony DeAngelo (3) and Jaccob Slavin (2) combined for five assists.
  • The Hurricanes overcame the loss of starting goaltender Antti Raanta, who was knocked out in the first period after a collision in goal. Pyotr Kochetkov relieved Raanta — who himself was starting in place of injured No. 1 goalie Frederik Andersen — and the rookie stopped 30 of 32 shots.
  • Veteran center Patrice Bergeron tallied both of Boston’s goals in Game 2. He also had a game-high seven shots.
  • The Bruins outshot Carolina for the second straight game, this time 38-34. Despite having an 84-59 shots edge in the series, Boston has been outscored 10-3.
  • Like the series opener, Game 2 was extremely chippy, with multiple scuffles. In all, 26 penalties were called. Yet the teams combined to go 3-for-14 on the power play after a combined 0-for-6 effort in Game 1.
  • Raanta has been ruled out for Game 3. Andersen (lower body) also isn’t fully healed. So Kochetkov is expected to get the start Friday.
