With the regular season starting soon, NFL betting on Super Bowl odds is on the rise, bolstered by some intriguing storylines the past few weeks. Most notably, Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere, so the Green Bay Packers are among the top contenders.

Not surprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs are the favorite, followed by the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But plenty of other teams are seeing action in the Super Bowl betting market.

Books Root For Packers and Chargers

Rodgers’ decision to return to Green Bay shook up the Super Bowl odds board, just as the uncertainty prior to that led oddsmakers to adjust. BetMGM Nevada opened the Packers +900 (9/1) back in January, then stretched that to +1,800 before moving it to +1,200 when news broke in late July that Rodgers would remain in Green Bay.

That made the Packers the co-third choice with the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, trailing only the Kansas City Chiefs (+450) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+700). As of Aug. 30, though, the Packers dialed back a touch to +1,400 and are now the co-fifth choice with the 49ers and Baltimore Ravens. Regardless, BetMGM Nevada’s Scott Shelton said Green Bay is among the best outcomes for his book among legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

“They’re good for us—seven-figure good,” Shelton said, while noting the book is also rooting for the Los Angeles Chargers, who opened +3,000, slipped to +5,000 and are now back at the +3,000 opener.

Most Bet Team: Cleveland Browns

Perhaps surprisingly, the Cleveland Browns—who have never been to a Super Bowl, let alone won a title—lead the ticket count at BetMGM Nevada, followed by the Buccaneers, then the Chiefs.

“The Browns have 100 more tickets than the Bucs, but both teams are in the thousands of tickets,” Shelton said, before pointing to the money leaders. “No. 1 is not even close—it’s the Bucs. The Browns have just a quarter of [the money] that’s been bet on the Bucs.”

Because of the flood of money, Tom Brady and Co. saw their Super Bowl futures odds tighten from +1,200 to +600, and they’re currently +700. And there are some big plays on a Bucs repeat championship.

“We’ve got a $50,000 bet at 9/1 to win $450,000; $25,000 at 8/1; and $30,000 and $20,000 bets at 7/1. And there are four-figure bets as far as the eye can see,” Shelton said. “The Buccaneers are our biggest loser by far, low seven figures.”

As for the Browns, they opened +2,500, twice got as short as +1,400, and have now settled at +1,600. But Cleveland isn’t attracting the large plays.

“The liability there is just from the sheer number of tickets,” Shelton said. “There are no real large bets on the Browns, like on the Bucs.”

Support For Vikings And Cowboys

The Minnesota Vikings—another franchise that has never won a Super Bowl—are the second-largest liability, while the Dallas Cowboys are running third, thanks to several mid-four-figure plays, Shelton said. The Cowboys opened +2,500, slipped to +4,000, then rebounded to +3,000. The Vikings bounced from +3,000 to as long as +6,600 and are now +4,000.
