2021-22 Super Bowl Odds: Bettors Not Backing Off Titans Yet

Week 9 of this 18-week NFL season has arrived, and Super Bowl odds continue to see noteworthy changes. The preseason favorite Kansas City Chiefs are no longer in the driver’s seat. In fact, the Super Bowl betting board would need to be a minivan for the Chiefs to still fit in the vehicle among the favorites.

The Buffalo Bills are atop the NFL title chase, followed by the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

PointsBet USA sports analyst Mike Korn helps us dive into Super Bowl odds and current action.

Remember The Titans

Tennessee (6-2 SU and ATS) has won four in a row on the field and against the bookies’ number. That includes impressive victories over Buffalo and Kansas City in back-to-back weeks.

However, the Titans aren’t in a good situation right now. Superstar running back Derrick Henry, who is lapping the league in rushing yards this year, following a Week 8 road win over Indianapolis. But oddsmakers and bettors aren’t giving up on Tennessee’s Super Bowl odds just yet.

“Tennessee came into the season at +3,000 to win the Super Bowl and was at +1,400 until the Derrick Henry injury news came in a few days ago,” Korn said. “Following the news, we shifted the Titans to +2,200, but took some sharp action at that price, which made us move the line back to +1, 600. Over the last three weeks, with [upset] wins over the Bills, Chiefs, and Colts, the Titans were one of our most-bet teams to win the Super Bowl.”

Moving On Up

The Dallas Cowboys weren’t in the top tier on the preseason Super Bowl odds board. Now, they’re in very good company. Dallas has gone from +3,000 to the +1,000 co-fifth choice, tied with the Baltimore Ravens and another big riser, the Arizona Cardinals.

Dak Prescott and Co. are starting to create concern behind the betting counter.

“The Cowboys are in the top five in terms of bet count/liability to win the Super Bowl. That’s a team the book will most likely have to worry about down the stretch,” Korn said.

The Cincinnati Bengals made the biggest surge over the first seven weeks of the season. PointsBet USA pegged the Bengals +10,000 (100/1) in early September, but after a strong start and a blowout road win vs. Baltimore, Cincy was bet down to +3,000. Then came last week’s debacle.

“After a disappointing loss last week to the Jets, we readjusted the line back out to +4,500,” Korn said. “But that’s still a team to keep an eye on, with a big liability looming.”

Going The Wrong Way

San Francisco began the season among the favorites in the Super Bowl odds market. Nine weeks later, the 49ers might want to see what they actually have in rookie quarterback Trey Lance. The Niners are 3-4 SU (2-5 ATS) and in a division featuring legit title contenders in the Cardinals and Rams.

“The 49ers’ opening Super Bowl [price] of +1,200 is the lowest that number has been all year,” Korn said. “It has slowly trickled out all season and even got as [long] as +7,500 at one point. It’s now back into +6,000. The 49ers will need to play much better the second half of the season for us to even put them on our radar.

“Another team that has struggled this year is the Cleveland Browns,” Korn said of the middling 4-4 outfit. “Coming into the season, the Browns were one of our biggest liabilities at +1,400. After a very disappointing [eight weeks], we have pushed their odds all the way out to +4,000. Like the 49ers, the Browns will need to do a lot to get this thing turned around in the second half of the season.”

Ticket Takers And (Maybe) Money Makers

The Los Angeles Rams (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) are No. 1 in ticket count and money in PointsBet USA’s Super Bowl odds market. Los Angeles, which in a trade with Denver this week added Von Miller to an already stellar defense, is the +650 third choice after opening +1,100. Only the favored Bills (+475) and Buccaneers (+600) have shorter odds.

Speaking of the Bills (5-2 SU, 4-2-1 ATS), they’re No. 2 in tickets and money while shortening from +1,200 to open the season. The Arizona Cardinals (7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS) are No. 3 in tickets while moving from a season-opening +2,800 to +1,000.

Meanwhile, the struggling Chiefs (4-4 SU, 2-6 ATS) are still third in Super Bowl money, but they’ve dropped from season-opening +550 favorites to the +1,200 eighth choice.

Korn said the Rams, Bills, and Chiefs join the aforementioned Cowboys as key Super Bowl liabilities for the book. PointsBet USA is rooting for the Ravens (+1,000), Packers (+850), and Tampa Bay to lift the Lombardi Trophy.
