The NFL regular season is still a few months away, but that’s not stopping bettors from getting their wagers in early. Below, we’ll break down the NFL Week 1 odds and some betting trends based on the early feedback.

That includes quite a surprise, as early bettors seem to be betting against a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Odds via BetMGM as of July 13.

Popular Pick No. 1: Steelers +3 (vs. 49ers)

The 49ers, known for their robust defense, are the 3-point favorites against the Steelers. However, the Steelers’ late-season surge last year and the 49ers’ wearisome cross-country travel might sway public betting. Either that or the Pittsburgh fans are just getting to the betting window early.

The action was enough for the spread to dip down to San Francisco -2.5 before returning to -3 shortly after.

Popular Bet No. 2: Packers-Bears Under 44.5

Yes, the Packers are without Aaron Rodgers, and that likely plays a role in the minds of bettors for NFL Week 1. With the former MVP shipped off to New York, this appears to be a defensive struggle between two teams of the “black and blue” NFC North.

The Packers struggled on offense for most of last season, and inserting Jordan Love into the mix could cause a few growing pains. The Bears had a nice draft class, but they are still a ways off in terms of development and getting Justin Fields enough help to light up the scoreboard on a consistent basis.

Taking divisional unders, especially early in the season, makes for a logical strategy. That’s where the betting public is going with this popular wager.

Popular Bet No. 3: Chiefs -6.5 vs. Lions

The Chiefs, basking in the afterglow of their Super Bowl victory, are all set for their Thursday Night clash with the Lions.

A majority of the betting public leans toward the Chiefs -6.5. This line is actually -7 at a few sportsbooks, so be sure to shop around for the best odds if you are placing an early wager.

The Lions are an intriguing side this year, as they have the best odds to win the NFC North. This game could potentially be a closer contest than what the bets suggest.
