With Week 7 of the NFL season upon us, Super Bowl odds are seeing some noteworthy changes. The preseason favorite Kansas City Chiefs are no longer in the driver’s seat — in fact, they’re not even riding shotgun. Patrick Mahomes and Co. are backseat drivers to the Buffalo Bills and defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And the surprising Arizona Cardinals, the last of the unbeatens, continue to make a noteworthy charge up the Super Bowl betting board.

TwinSpires Sportsbook trading analyst Zachary Lucas helps us dive into Super Bowl 56 odds and current action.

Moving On Up

When the NFL season opened Sept. 9, TwinSpires had Arizona in the middle of the pack with odds of +4,500 (45/1) to win the Super Bowl. Seven weeks later, there are only five teams ahead of the Cardinals, who are +1,100 to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

Arizona is 6-0 SU and a near-perfect 5-1 ATS, delivering on the field and at the betting counter on a weekly basis. But Super Bowl bettors aren’t rushing in on the Cardinals, so the TwinSpires risk room would love to see Kyler Murray and Co. keep rolling.

“We’ve only seen 2 percent of the money on the Cardinals. They would be a great result for us to win it all,” Lucas said.

Likewise, the Dallas Cowboys, who are 5-1 SU and the NFL’s only perfect spread-covering outfit at 6-0. Mike McCarthy’s troops — yes, Mike McCarthy, if you can believe that — are heading north up the odds board, but creating little liability.

The Cowboys opened +3,500 and are now right behind Arizona as the +1,200 co-seventh choice, along with the Green Bay Packers.

“The Cowboys are a good result for us,” Lucas said. “We’ve had some handle pick up on them, but nothing significant.”

Going The Wrong Way

Back in early September, the San Francisco 49ers were among the top teams on TwinSpires’ Super Bowl odds board. The 49ers, two years removed from their last Super Bowl, were at +1,400 and seen as a legit Super Bowl threat in the NFC.

Now, the Niners are +4,000, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo continuing to be injury-prone. And San Fran is rapidly falling back in an extremely competitive NFC West. A Week 7 loss to the visiting Indianapolis Colts could quickly lead to the Trey Lance Experiment, with the rookie QB taking the reins.

“QB issues haven’t helped the 49ers. We haven’t seen much action on them,” Lucas said.

Ticket Takers And (Maybe) Money Makers

The Cleveland Browns are No. 1 in Super Bowl ticket count at TwinSpires, taking almost twice as many bets as the second-place Packers. Cleveland opened +1,700 and is now +2,000, while Green Bay made a slight move from +1,300 to +1,200.

Buffalo is taking the third-most tickets while moving from +1,000 to the +550 co-favorite with Tampa Bay.

The Browns, Packers, and Bills are also 1-2-3 in money at TwinSpires, with dollars wagered even more weighted to Baker Mayfield and Co.: Cleveland is taking 38 percent of all cash in the Super Bowl futures odds market, with Green Bay a distant second at 14 percent.

So even though the co-favorite Bucs and third-choice Chiefs (+700) are and will remain popular plays, there’s really only one root-against for TwinSpires.

“We really just need to avoid the Browns,” Lucas said. “It’s very lopsided toward them.”
