The Yankees and Red Sox will clash one more before the All-Star break. This is the rubber match of the series, and it should be an exciting one as it pins two of the premier pitchers in the league against each other.

Let’s break down the Yankees vs Red Sox odds while offering a prediction on this Sunday afternoon matchup.

Will Chris “Sale Along” In His Second Start?

Chris Sale pitched well in his 2022 debut, going five shutout innings with one walk and five strikeouts in a no-decision against the Rays. He located his fastball with accuracy, the slider looked sharp, and he kept the changeup down. Overall, it was an impressive performance considering he has missed so much time.

Sale has plenty of history pitching at Yankee Stadium with 11 appearances, but this will be the first time he’s pitched in the Bronx since 2019. His last three starts in New York have not gone well, as he’s 0-3 with a 9.82 ERA. For him, it’ll will be about keeping his pitches down. When his mechanics are off, he tends to leave them up, and in Yankee Stadium, that can result in the cheap home runs into the short porch in right field.

We know the Yankees are one of the best lineups in baseball, and they’ve proved it throughout the season. Last night was no exception, as the Bronx Bombers posted 14 runs. Some players in this lineup have good numbers against Sale, and if he isn’t careful, he can run into trouble.

Josh Donaldson has the best numbers off Sale, batting .286 with five home runs, while DJ LeMahieu has a home run in the last two games against Sale at home.

Gerrit Cole Has Struggled Vs Boston

Gerrit Cole has looked good throughout the season, except when he plays the Red Sox. In two starts this season against Boston, he’s struggled and allowed eight earned in nine innings. I don’t know if that start from the one-game playoff last year is still in his head, but thankfully the Yankees have given him plenty of run support in those games, and the team is 2-0 in those starts.

The Red Sox bats have cooled off after being one of the best for a two-month period. From May 1-July 1, they lead the league in AVG, SLG, OPS, BABIP, wOBA, and WRC+, which helped them get back into contention in the American League. They haven’t been abysmal like they were in the first month of the season, but they have been in the bottom half in those categories in July.

Several players on this team have had success against Cole, including Rafael Devers, who’s hitting .320 and six home runs, along with Xander Bogarts and JD Martinez, who have two home runs each. This lineup has been successful in general against the Yankees this year, including Cole.

Yankees Vs Red Sox Prediction

The Yankees have been the Bronx Bombers this weekend as they put 20 runs in the first two games. Even with two of the best on the mound, it’s been safe to side with the Over in these matchups. If you’re looking to side with a team, I’m taking New York, but the best bet lies with the Over.
