Season Series: The Blue Jays won Monday’s series opener 3-0. Toronto also won last year’s season series, 11-8.
Did you know: Monday’s game continued several series trends from 2021. The road team went 14-5 in the rivalry last season; only four of the 19 contests were one-run games; and the Under went 12-6-1. All three applied Monday as well.
About Toronto: The Blue Jays recorded their first shutout of the season Monday. Alek Manoah pitched six innings of one-hit ball, with seven strikeouts and four walks. Center fielder George Springer plated all three of Toronto’s runs with a two-run home run and a double. He is batting .389/.450/.833 on the young season.
About Yusei Kikuchi: Kikuchi, who signed a three-year $36 million deal in the offseason, will make his Blue Jays debut after spending his first three seasons with Seattle. The southpaw was far better in the first half of the 2021 campaign (6-4, 3.48 ERA) than the second half (1-5, 5.98 ERA). Kikuchi made two starts against the Yankees last season for the Mariners. He took the loss in a 5-4 home defeat on July 7, giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings, then got a no-decision in a much better performance Aug. 8, yielding four hits in five shutout innings in a 2-0 road win.
About New York: The Yankees’ bats have been quiet to start the season, producing four, three and zero runs in the past three games, respectively, after plating six on Opening Day. In Monday’s game, New York drew five walks to go along with their four hits (all singles). The Yankees have lost two straight after opening with two wins. No one in the regular lineup has a better batting average than Giancarlo Stanton’s .294.
About Nestor Cortes: Cortes produced a solid campaign in his first season as a split starter, posting a 2.90 ERA in 22 appearances (14 starts) for the Yankees. He was particular sharp in the Bronx, allowing just 13 earned runs in 46.1 innings (2.53 ERA). It was the first time in four big-league seasons that the lefty produced a positive WAR at 1.7. Cortes made one start against the Blue Jays last season, getting a no-decision in a 6-4 home loss Sept. 9. He allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Injuries: Toronto C Danny Jansen went on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left oblique strain. He was 4-for-7 with two home runs in two games this season. … Yankees C Ben Rortvedt remains on the 10-day injured list and will be back sometime this month from his oblique strain.

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants
First Pitch/TV: 9:45 p.m. ET/TBS
San Diego: 4-1 (1-4 O/U)
San Francisco: 2-2 (1-3 O/U)
Moneyline/Runline/Total: Giants -113/Padres -1.5 +150/7.5 (Over -120)
Pitching Matchup : SD RHP Yu Darvish (2021): 8-11, 166.1 IP, 44 BB, 199 K, 3.90 FIP … SF RHP Alex Cobb (2021): 8-3, 93.1 IP, 98 SO, 2.92 FIP
Season Series: The Padres took the first of 19 head-to-head matchups this season, rallying for a 4-2 victory Monday. The Giants won the 2021 season series 11-8, but including Monday’s result, the teams have alternated wins and losses in the last six battles.
Did you know: The Giants won a franchise-record 107 games last season before falling to the NL West rival Dodgers 3-2 in the Division Series. The Padres faltered badly down the stretch last season to miss the playoffs. They have not won the NL West since 2006 and haven’t reached the playoffs in a full 162-game season since 2007.
About San Diego: Less than a week into the 2022 campaign, the Padres own the best record in baseball at 4-1, despite playing all five games on the road. San Diego blew a 2-0 ninth-inning lead at Arizona and lost 4-2 on Opening Day, swept the next three games of the series, then posted a 4-2 victory in San Francisco on Monday. Ironically, both teams had 10 hits, four walks, 11 strikeouts and left 11 runners on base. The Padres have allowed two runs or fewer in three of their five games. First baseman Eric Hosmer has come out smoking after nearly being traded to the New York Mets before the season. He is batting .533 (8-for-15)/.563/.733.
About Yu Darvish: Darvish is making his second start of the season. He took a no-decision in the Padres’ 4-2 loss to Arizona on Thursday despite throwing six no-hit innings. Darvish faced the Giants four times last season. He booked two solid outings in April, allowing one run in each with a total of four walks and 19 strikeouts. But in the final two meetings 10 days apart in September, he surrendered 12 runs on nine hits (five home runs), losing 9-1 in San Francisco and getting a no-decision in the Padres’ 7-6 home win.
About San Francisco: The Giants took two of three from Miami to open the season before losing to San Diego on Monday. They haven’t scored more than three runs since Opening Day, and a big reason has been an inability to hit in clutch situations. For instance, San Francisco went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position Monday. The Giants also have just three home runs so far, one of which came off the bat of first baseman Brandon Belt, who is batting .417 (the only regular batting above .250).
About Alex Cobb: Cobb is making his Giants debut after signing a two-year, $20 million deal in the offseason. He is coming off a solid season in his lone campaign with the Los Angeles Angels, in which he went 8-3 with a 3.76 ERA and the best FIP of his career at 2.92. The veteran right-hander got hit hard in his final 2021 start (five runs, seven hits, five innings at Texas). Prior to that, though, Cobb had allowed a total of four earned runs in six starts spanning 35.1 innings (1.02 ERA). Something to watch: This is Cobb’s first season pitching for a National League team.
Injuries: Star San Diego shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is out until June with a fractured left wrist. … San Francisco right-handed RP John Brebbia is on the bereavement list, and it is uncertain when he will return. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in the Giants’ first two games. Third baseman Evan Longoria is still waiting to make his season debut after having finger surgery.
Notable Trends
- San Diego’s current four-game winning streak has come on the road vs. NL West rivals
- San Diego is 2-7 in Darvish’ last nine starts overall (0-1 this season)
- In Cobb’s final 17 starts last season with the Angels, the Over was 12-5
- Over is 12-4 in the past 16 Padres-Giants meetings (0-1 this season)
- Over is 10-4-1 in the past 15 series meetings in San Francisco (0-1 this season)

Then this morning, the line jumped the fence to San Francisco -110 on the way to a Giants -115 peak, and the moneyline has since toggled around pick ’em, with both teams spending time as slim favorites. The Giants are now -113, with ticket count dead even and money actually almost 2/1 on the Padres. The total opened at a tidy 8 (Under -115) and is now at 7.5 (Over -120), with ticket count approaching 3/1 and practically all the money on the Under.
