Bad news for sports bettors: College football’s regular season has come to a close.

Good news for sports bettors: College basketball’s regular season is heating up fast, with several power conferences getting a jump-start on league play this month.

Going forward, Props.com will profile one marquee game every Monday through Thursday, examining that matchup from a college basketball betting perspective.

Tuesday’s clash features one program that consistently ranks in the top 10 and another school full of blue-chip recruiting talent (which is prized by NBA scouts) … but also shaky overall results.

Odds & Ends

— Alabama comes into this one off back-to-back victories over ranked teams — 91-82 over No. 3 Gonzaga (neutral site) on Dec. 4 and 83-82 over No. 14 Houston at home on Saturday. The Crimson Tide went to Seattle and beat the Zags as a 9.5-point underdog, but failed to cover a 3-point spread in the win over Houston.

— Alabama has won four straight overall (3-1 ATS) since suffering its lone defeat of the season, a 72-68 neutral-site setback to Iona as a 13-point favorite.

— Memphis started the season 5-0, capped by a 69-61 victory over Virginia Tech as a 3-point favorite. Since then, however, the Tigers — who were ranked as high as No. 9 a couple of weeks ago — have dropped four in a row both SU and ATS. That includes three stunning losses as a double-digit favorite: 78-59 neutral-site loss to Iowa State as an 11.5-point chalk; 82-79 loss at Georgia as an 11.5-point chalk; and Friday’s 74-72 home loss to Murray State as a 10-point chalk.

— Aside from the eight-point win over Virginia Tech, Memphis’ other four victories were double-digit routs (24-point win vs. Tennessee Tech; 39-point win vs. NC Central; 16-point vs. Saint Louis; 12-point win vs. Western Kentucky).

— The Tigers have lost 13 of their last 15 games against nationally-ranked opponents dating back to March 2018. They have also dropped their last three matchups vs. SEC competition. Memphis’ last victory over an SEC foe: 51-47 over in-state rival Tennessee on Dec. 14, 2019 — exactly three years ago today.

— The Crimson Tide have won their last 10 Tuesday games, with an average victory margin of 15.9 points. Alabama covered tonight’s consensus line of -3.5 nine times in those 10 contests, including eight double-digit wins.

— These teams last met in the 2017-18 season opener on a neutral floor in Annapolis, Maryland). The Crimson Tide rolled to an 82-70 victory as a 4-point favorite.

— This season, the Crimson Tide and their opponents are averaging 158.2 combined points per game, while Memphis and its foes are averaging 144.3 points per outing.

— Alabama’s last five matchups against American Athletic Conference foes since December 2017) featured combined totals of 165, 176, 134, 152 and 127 points.

— Player to Watch: Alabama guard Jaden Shackleford leads the team in scoring (19.1 points per game) and rebounds (6.9). The California native — who averaged 15.0 and 14.0 points per game in his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa — has already notched two double-doubles (against South Alabama and Iona). The junior also averaged 23.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the Tide’s recent signature victories over Gonzaga and Houston.
