Suns Favored To Re-sign CP3

Despite the news of Paul’s impending waiver, the Phoenix Suns are still the favorites to retain his services. This might seem counterintuitive, but a tweet from Shams Charania provides some context.

According to Charania, the Suns and Paul are exploring multiple options. One of which involves re-signing him for a lower salary in an effort to keep the their salary obligations down with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, DeAndre Ayton all commanding a pretty penny.

Lakers & Clippers In The Mix

The Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers are also high on the list of potential destinations for Paul. The Lakers, in particular, could be an attractive option given Paul’s close relationship with LeBron James and the team’s championship aspirations.

It doesn’t seem like the Lakers are thrilled with D’Angelo Russell or Dennis Schroder at point guard, and getting a playmaker like Paul to run the pick-and-roll with Anthony Davis seems like a positive.

The Clippers, Paul’s former team, also have a strong roster and could benefit from his leadership and playmaking abilities. Russell Westbrook manned the Clippers’ point guard position down the stretch last season, but he’s now an unrestricted free agent while potentially looking for a new team himself.

In other words, the Clips have an opening at the point guard spot, and Paul could fill the void.

Chris Paul’s Intentions

According to Chris Haynes, Paul plans to play for several more years and is eager to help a team contend for a championship. This suggests that Paul will be looking to join a team that has a realistic chance of competing for the NBA title in the near future.

Because of that, it’s not surprising to see teams like the Lakers, Clippers, Celtics, and Heat toward the top of the list.

The San Antonio Spurs make for a surprising team with similar odds to those contenders. However, the Spurs are expected to land No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama in the NBA Draft, which provides a massive boost to their roster. Perhaps CP3 would be intrigued to throw lobs to the 7-foot-5 generational talent for a season.
