About the only thing that can keep the Los Angeles Angels from losing baseball games these days is Mother Nature — and even then, the losses are only delayed.
After Wednesday’s game at Yankee Stadium was rained out, the Angels returned to the field Thursday afternoon and lost 6-1 in a rain-delayed opener of a doubleheader. The defeat stretched Los Angeles’ season-long losing skid to seven. And if you believe bookmakers across the land, loss No. 8 in a row is looming in the nightcap.
Facing the best team in baseball — and handing the ball to a pitcher who has given up eight runs in his last 9.2 innings — Los Angeles is understandably an underdog on the Angels vs Yankees odds board for Game 2.

About the Angels
Hits & Misses: Los Angeles has surrendered 20 runs in its last two games, 43 during its six-game slide and 77 during an ongoing 3-10 slump that dates to May 16. Somehow, the Angels still entered Thursday with a team ERA (3.79) that ranks in the top half of MLB (13th). They also rank 8th in both WHIP (1.17) and opponents’ batting average (.224). Even with big bats like Trout and Shohei Ohtani in the lineup, the offense has been slumping. Over their last 19 games, the Halos have scored more than five runs just twice, while tallying three runs or fewer 10 times. And Trout is 0-for-12 with one walk in his last three games. L.A., which started the season 23-11, is now six games behind Houston in the AL West (and just 2.5 games ahead of third-place Texas).
Detmers vs New York: Since his stunning no-hitter against the Rays on May 10, Detmers has gotten roughed up in consecutive starts against the Rangers. The 22-year-old southpaw allowed a combined eight runs on eight hits — including four home runs — in just 9.2 innings. L.A. lost both games, 10-5 in Texas and 7-2 at home. Detmers has been far more effective pitching in Anaheim (2-2, 3.10 ERA in five starts) than in enemy territory (0-0, 8.49 ERA in three starts). He has a solid 27-11 K/BB ratio, but he’s surrendered seven home runs in just 40.2 innings. Wednesday will be his first career start against the Yankees.
Key injuries: C Kurt Suzuki (neck) and pitcher Jimmy Herget (finger) each have missed the last three games and remain day-to-day.
About the Yankees
Hits & Misses: New York has pounded out 13 hits in each of the first two games against the Angels 13 hits, including six doubles and six homers. While the offense has come alive after scoring just five total runs in the previous three games combined (all in Tampa Bay), the pitching staff has been steady all season. New York, which has surrendered just 11 runs in the past seven contests, is yielding an MLB-low 3.02 runs per game. That includes just 3.15at hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers are now 19-7 at home. That matches the Mets (19-8) for most home victories in MLB. New York, which leads the AL East by 5.5 games, once again sport MLB’s best record (one game better than the Mets). The team’s +84 run differential is second only to the Dodgers (+112).
Taillon vs Los Angeles: Taillon is coming off two terrific starts against the White Sox and Rays. He allowed a combined one run and eight baserunners (seven hits, one walk) while striking out 12 in 15 innings. Taillon pitched a season-high seven innings against Chicago (no-decision in a 3-1 home loss), then topped it with an eight-inning effort Friday in Tampa (2-0 win). The veteran right-hander has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts (giving up three runs in the other). He’s also pitched into the fifth inning of each contest. New York is 7-2 behind Taillon this season, scoring just one run in the two losses (3-1 to the White Sox, 3-0 to the Blue Jays, both at home). Taillon’s only two starts against the Angels came two months apart last season, and he got bombed for a combined 11 runs on 14 hits (four home runs) in 10 innings. The Yankees won 11-5 at home and lost 6-4 in Anaheim.
Key injuries: 3B Josh Donaldson (shoulder), DH/OF Giancarlo Stanton (calf) and RP Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) remain on the short-term injured list. All three are out indefinitely.

That’s a sharp increase from the opening moneyline of Yankees -125/Angels +105. New York is attracting 74% of all moneyline wagers at PointsBet, while the Angels are fetching 66% of the cash.
The total hit PointsBet’s odds board at 7.5, but that was when Shohei Ohtani was supposed to pitch for Los Angeles. Ohtani instead started Game 1 of the doubleheader.
