Thursday Best Bets: One NHL Side, One NHL Prop

Wednesday’s Best Bets went 2-for-3, causing some serious deja vu from last week, when we went 2-for-3 for three straight days.

While we aren’t sure how Thursday’s Best Bets will turn out, we do know one thing: we won’t go 2-for-3 again. That’s because we only have two Best Bets on tap, as our NBA Props (27-12) are forced to take a one-day hiatus due to no action in the Association on Thursday.

If you really want an NBA prop, you could bet on the amount of Twitter burners in use for Kevin Durant (we set the Over/Under at 5.5), but we can’t seem to find that line at legitimate sportsbooks.

If you want to bet on lines actually posted in sportsbook apps, then check out our pair of NHL picks for Thursday’s Best Bets!

The bet: Capitals +1.5 (at Florida)
The odds: -110
Where to bet: DraftKings Sportsbook
From: Matt Perrault via The Bostonian Vs. The Book podcast

Matt Perrault of The Bostonian Vs. The Book podcast is on a two-night winning streak in this Best Bets series. In an effort to keep that momentum, he is betting on the NHL playoffs on Thursday, taking the Washington Capitals +1.5 (-110) at the Florida Panthers for Game 2 of that matchup.

Perrault notes that Washington is a veteran team that has been good on the road this season, holding a 25-10-6 record on the highway. On top of that, the Capitals have finished within a goal (or won outright) in every meeting with the Panthers this season. Here’s how those matchups played out:

  • Panthers win 5-4 at home on Nov. 4
  • Capitals win 4-3 at home on Nov. 26
  • Panthers win 5-4 at home on Nov. 30
  • Capitals win 4-2 in Florida on May 3 (Game 1)

Florida will likely come out with plenty of energy while trying to avenge that 4-2 loss in Game 1. Perrault acknowledged that point while admitting that the Panthers will probably win this game. However, he likes the seasonal trend to continue, believing that Florida will win by only one goal, with an outside shot of Washington notching another upset.

The Props.com action report for Game 2 shows that the public is betting on Florida on the moneyline and puckline, so Perrault is going against the consensus on this pick (for better or worse).

You can find the Capitals +1.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook, though the price is now up to -120.

BetPrep Prop of the Day: LW Chris Kreider (NY Rangers)

The bet: Over 2.5 shots on goal (vs. Pittsburgh)
The odds: -136
Where to bet: FanDuel Sportsbook
From: BetPrep Prop of the Day via BetPrep.com

There’s no NBA on Thursday, so the BetPrep Prop of the Day comes from the NHL. The subject of this offering is Rangers left wing Chris Kreider to go Over 2.5 shots on goal against the Penguins in Game 2 of this first-round series.

The rationale for BetPrep’s portion of the Best Bets series:

  • Kreider has recorded three-plus shots on goal in each of his last seven games overall.
  • Kreider has recorded three-plus shots on goal in each of his last five home games.

On top of that, Kreider is averaging 4.1 shots on goal per contest over his last seven games. Across 82 total games, he’s averaging 3.22 shots on goal per outing.

You can find Kreider Over 2.5 shots on goal (-136) at FanDuel Sportsbook.
