Yankees Vs Blue Jays Odds: Manoah Favored Over Streaking Bombers

The Toronto Blue Jays have the man to stop the New York Yankees’ lengthy win streak. At least that’s what sportsbooks are saying based on the odds for Tuesday’s game.

Despite the Yankees having won 10 in a row, including a victory in Toronto on Monday, the Blue Jays are favored Tuesday to trim New York’s growing lead in the AL East. In fact, it’s the first time all season the Yankees will take the field as an underdog.

The reason? Rising-star Alek Manoah is on the mound for Toronto.

Did you know: The Yankees’ winning streak is the longest in the majors this season and the team’s largest since winning 13 in a row last August.

About the Yankees

Hits & Misses: Second baseman Gleyber Torres hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth Monday to break a 2-2 tie, and New York escaped with the one-run victory as -115 favorites. Torres accounted for all three runs, as he also belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The game stayed Under 8.5. The Yankees have outscored their opponents 70-30 during their 10-game run, covering the run line eight times. The streak began with nine straight victories against teams with losing records (Cleveland, Baltimore and Kansas City). New York was a -170 favorite or better in all nine contests before going off as a short chalk Monday. The Yankees, who now lead Toronto by 2.5 games in the AL East, continue to sport baseball’s best record. They also have MLB’s second-best run differential (+42), trailing only the Los Angeles Dodgers (+47).

Taillon vs Blue Jays: Tuesday is a pitching rematch from an April 11 contest at Yankee Stadium. Taillon suffered a 3-0 defeat in that contest, but he didn’t pitch poorly, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings. However, Manoah outdueled him, yielding only one hit in six scoreless innings. Taillon has not allowed more than two runs in any outing this season, and the Yankees won the three subsequent games in which he started. That said, Taillon hasn’t pitched more than five innings in any of his four starts. The veteran right-hander sports a 17-2 K/BB ratio in 19.1 innings. Taillon was 0-2 in three starts against the Blue Jays last season, allowing nine runs on 13 hits in 13 innings with 10 strikeouts and four walks.

Key injuries: LF Joey Gallo (groin) missed a second straight game Monday, though he was available to pinch-hit. He is listed as questionable Tuesday.

About the Blue Jays

Hits & Misses: While the Yankees continue to pile up victories, the Blue Jays remain the favorites to win the AL pennant. Even with Monday’s defeat, Toronto is still 9-4 in its last 13 games, including taking four of six from the Houston Astros. However, the Blue Jays remain in a mini-slump at the plate. Taking away a seven-run outburst against the Astros on Friday, Toronto has scored only nine runs in the past five games. CF and leadoff hitter George Springer has been a bright spot offensively, hitting .299/.361/.563 with six home runs and 12 RBIs, and 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .277/.347/.518 with six homers and 16 RBIs.

Manoah vs Yankees: The right-hander has been brilliant to start the season, winning all four of his starts, including the stellar outing April 11 in the Bronx. Manoah has allowed only four runs on 15 hits in 25 innings this season, with 25 strikeouts and seven walks. Going back to last season, he’s allowed two runs or fewer in eight straight starts. Most importantly, Toronto is undefeated in Manoah’s last 12 trips to the mound dating to late August. This year, he ranks sixth in the majors with a 1.44 ERA. Manoah has needed to be at his best, because Toronto’s offense has not given him much support, with a total of 11 runs scored in his four outings. He is 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees.

Key injuries: RP Tayler Saucedo has moved to the 10-day injured list with right hip discomfort. RF Teoscar Hernandez (oblique) is out Tuesday but expected to return Thursday. SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (forearm), 2B Cavan Biggio (COVID list) and C Dan Jansen (oblique) all remain out indefinitely.
