PGA Tour Preview: RSM Classic

This week the PGA Tour visits Sea Island, GA for the RSM Classic. This is a long-time tour stop and once again, as with many of the wraparound-season events, it’s a short-hitters paradise.

This is a well known fact on Tour and the field reflects that this is a big chance for the bulk of the tour who don’t have as much upside at the monster layouts featured over the summertime.

The “Sea Island Mafia” will also be in full attendance as this is home for several tour players.

So, there’s actually a lot of great course-fit and home-field-advantage plays to choose from, but the number one guy that stands out from an upside perspective is Mackenzie Hughes.

It’s hard during this stretch of tournaments to not go “back to the well” as Hughes continues a freakishly good run of form on the greens, and that is what will decide this tournament, as distance is almost irrelevant here.

Hughes has the “benefit” of coming off of a complete dud last week, which probably makes him come in with a slightly better number than we might expect at +3500 at both FanDuel and DraftKings.

Ignore last week, take the money, and run! As Hughes posted a 2nd place finish here in both of the past two seasons, as well as a victory in his first try here in 2017.

Other notables are Denny McCarthy, Chris Kirk, and JJ Spaun who generally fit the mold, are playing well enough lately, and/or have good history here. Something is wrong with Kirk’s putter lately but this could be a “get-right” opportunity at a place where he’s putted well in the past.

However, the most interesting player and story of the week might be that Gary Woodland is teeing it up here! This is one of the worst courses on tour for a player who has built their career around their long game, and Woodland only played here once early in his career and hasn’t been back since.

He is currently set to lose his PGA Tour card for 2025 however without a very high finish in this last event of the season, so he’s basically forced to give it a shot.

Sounds like a desperation move, but the kicker is that he has really been putting fantastic for the majority of the past 10-15 events and he’s absolutely buried at +8000 on FanDuel. Yes, the driver is taken out of his hands a lot, but if his short game has recovered he’s arguably one of the most talented golfers in the field, and while I Don’t like him over Hughes, and it’s not a good course fit, that number is way too big to pass up, especially when he’s got everything to play for.

RSM Classic Picks:

Mackenzie Hughes +3500
Gary Woodland +8000
