Trading Places
Drake London went a bit sooner than expected in the 2022 NFL Draft, going eighth overall to the Atlanta Falcons. The USC wideout also was the first offensive skill player drafted. As such, Caesars opened London a +500 favorite on its NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds board.
Right behind London at +700 was former Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett, who went No. 20 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But this week, London slid to +700, relinquishing the top spot as Pickett adjusted to +600.
As Caesars Sports’ Max Meyer noted, it was inevitable. London was getting zero play thus far, literally taking one bet for $2. (Cue the clip from the cult-classic movie Better Off Dead.) That’s a potential payout of just 10 bucks. At Caesars, 20 other rookies have more tickets and 31 have more money.
“London not getting any attention is interesting,” Pullen said. “With [Calvin] Ridley out for the year, you’d figure he’s going to have a prominent role with the Falcons. But a lot of people like to look for value; they like to take the longer shots on the board. So it’s not too surprising. It’s a relatively new market we’ve booked, and we’re going to learn a little every year.”
Tickets And Money
Meanwhile, Pickett leads in money wagered on at 43%. However, the bulk of that came from a Nevada customer who bet $5,000 at +700, for a potential $30,000 win.
“That Pickett bet was a decent bet for something like this,” Pullen said. “He’s the quarterback for the Steelers, one of the [league’s] most popular teams. Steelers money usually comes in, no matter what, on a variety of different markets. People are also going to be drawn to quarterbacks. Pickett will be thrown into the fire, so all eyes will definitely be on him.”
If you want to win this award — and you’re not a QB — then it certainly helps to be on the receiving end of an all-time great. Such is the case with wideout Christian Watson, a North Dakota State product drafted 34th overall by the Green Bay Packers.
Which means Watson will have Aaron Rodgers chucking him footballs — footballs that used to go Davante Adams’ direction, but no longer.
So it makes sense to see Watson leading the ticket count in Caesars’ NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds market. And he’s on the move up the board, too, now at +1000 after opening +1600. In fact, the top three ticket-takers are wideouts: New Orleans Saints rookie Chris Olave (+1200) is No. 2 in tickets, followed by Kansas City Chiefs rookie Skyy Moore (+1500).
Run To Daylight … And Dollars
Caesars noted a couple of running backs seeing early play, as well. Houston Texans rookie Dameon Pierce, who played at Florida, is fourth in tickets and money, and his odds have shortened from +5000 to +2800. And the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Rachaad White (Arizona State) drew a $1,000 bet at +8000, helping push his price to +5000.
“It’s interesting to see how the public has viewed this market so far,” Caesars assistant director of trading Adam Pullen said. “London was the first skill-position guy picked in a weak quarterback class, so it makes sense we had him as the favorite. I don’t think there are any bad prices, especially on something like this where it’s total speculation. We’ll see how it progresses; it’s still early on in the game. Obviously once [the rookies] get on the field, that’ll be more of an indicator for how much they will get used.”
Indeed, these odds are certainly influenced by which rookies are deemed most likely to get playing time. With that in mind, it’s interesting that running back Breece Hall is the +800 co-third choice in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds — along with his new teammate, wideout Garrett Wilson. Hall (Iowa State) and Wilson (Ohio State) were drafted by the New York Jets. Joining Hall and Wilson at +800 is Tennessee Titans wideout Treylon Burks (Arkansas).
