Is BetMGM Legit?

History & Background

MGM doesn’t need more of an introduction than it already has, but many in the U.S. aren’t familiar with its partner in BetMGM, Entain. The company was founded in 2004 in Luxembourg, starting as Gaming VC Holdings.

Six years later, it was reorganized as GVC Holdings. Then, in 2012, GVC and William Hill bought Sportingbet, with William Hill taking the company’s Australian and Spanish markets and GVC taking control of everything else.

In 2016, GVC acquired Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment after it won a bidding war with 888 Holdings. That started a remarkable recovery in GVC’s financial situation. Since the acquisition, Bwin.party has returned to growth after many years of falling sales.

A year later, GVC Holdings agreed to buy Ladbrokes Coral in a deal worth as much as $5.4 billion; the acquisition was completed a year later.

A Giant Is Born: Entain Plc

That same year, in July, it agreed to a $200-million, 50/50 deal with MGM to capitalize on the then-nascent US betting market. Then, in September 2020, GVC announced that it would change its name to Entain plc and that it was committing to only operate in regulated gaming markets by 2023. They officially changed the name on December 9 after shareholders approved.

Entain operates several betting brands in the 18 countries in which it is licensed. It is behind Betboo, bwin, Gamebookers, Ladbrokes & Coral, Neds, Sportingbet and, of course, BetMGM. It is also involved in iGaming and owns PartyPoker, PartyCasino, CasinoClub, Gioco Digitale, Cashcade, Foxy Bingo, and other online casino and online poker entities.

BetMGM isn’t traded publicly. Although the MGM parent company has been trying to negotiate a buyout with Entain that could see it listed on an exchange. Instead, Entain is traded on over-the-counter markets, while MGM is found on the NYSE under the ticker MGM.

BetMGM is led by Adam Greenblatt, formerly the director of corporate development and strategy for Entain (as GVC) and Ladbrokes. He is also the president of Entain’s US sports betting software company, Stadium Technology Group, held a position since 2012.

Ryan Spoon is the platform’s chief operating officer, having moved from ESPN and the roles thereof Senior VP of Social & Digital Content and VP of Digital Product & Design. Spoon is a two-time Sports Business Journal Forty Under 40 winner.
