Sunday Night Football Predictions: Week 1

The Bucs are one of the top teams in the NFC again this year, but the shine is off the star for the Cowboys in 2022, despite jostling with the Eagles for favorite status in the NFC East.

The Cowboys traded Amari Cooper to the Browns, and Michael Gallup is out. As a result, Dallas’s receiving room is thin.

Remarkably, that’s not the biggest concern for the ‘Boys. Instead, their offensive line is a problem. Three of their best linemen from last year are no longer in the mix. Specifically, Connor Williams and La’el Collins are on new clubs, and Tyron Smith is injured.

The Bucs have offensive-line issues as well. Center Ryan Jensen is injured, guard Ali Marpet retired in the offseason, and Alex Cappa left in free agency. Additionally, Tristan Wirfs has been a limited participant in practice with an abdomen injury. However, they traded for stud guard Shaq Mason and spent a second-round pick on offensive lineman Luke Goedeke, creating some hope for competence at a minimum out of the gate. Moreover, if I trust anyone to mitigate line issues, the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady is near the top of the list.

Brady has a bevy of weapons at his disposal, even if Chris Godwin sits out or is on a snap count in his return from January knee surgery for a torn MCL and ACL. Both the teams have talented defenses, but the loss of Randy Gregory from Dallas’s defensive line is a significant blow.

Overall, the Bucs are the better team. I don’t object to anyone laying slightly more juice to bet them on the moneyline, but I think the spread is light and will gladly lay the 2.5 points betting the favored Bucs.
