Who Is Favored To Win The AL Cy Young?

Gerrit Cole is favored to win the American League Cy Young. The Yankees ace has performed consistently well over the past few years. Even though he has never won a Cy Young, he has been a nominee that was narrowly edged out two times in his career.

Replicating his 3.50 ERA from last season probably isn’t good enough to take home the award. However, if he can replicate his numbers from 2019 when he was with the Astros, count him in for a potential lock on the league’s top pitching accolade. A 2.50 ERA reminiscent of that campaign could definitely do the trick.

AL Cy Young Odds Movement & News

Mar. 7: As previously mentioned, Cole is the favorite to take home the AL Cy Young award. Last year, Cole went 13-8 in a bit of an underwhelming season. However, he did have the second-best strikeout to walk percentage in baseball, which some value to be the top pitching stat. As long as Cole can mitigate the home run ball, his +600 odds as the favorite will only improve.

Sitting alongside Cole as the favorite to win the AL Cy Young is Jacob DeGrom. This will be DeGrom’s first year in the American League and he is immediately a favorite at +600 to take home the award. The 2018 and 2019 NL Cy Young award winner is an immediate threat going into his 2023 for the Rangers. In 2019 and 2020, the former Mets ace led the NL in strikeouts and his career ERA in his nine years in the league is 2.52. These numbers easily make him a favorite.

Dylan Cease sits just behind Cole and DeGrom with +800 odds. In 2022, Justin Verlander’s dominant season was the only reason for Cease not taking home the award. A 14-8 and career-best 2.20 ERA in 2022 places him just behind the two superstars above him.

How To Read AL Cy Young Odds

Betting odds aren’t anything for inexperienced bettors to sweat. The odds for the Cy Young award are presented in minus or plus fashion. A line, such as Gerrit Cole at -130, means a bettor must bet $130 for a $230 payout, resulting in a $100 profit. Smaller-scale bettors can bet $55 for a $97.31 payout.

Conversely, plus odds are even easier to understand. For example, odds of +15000 on an underdog mean a $100 wager will payout $15,100. With long odds like that, even a recreational sports bettor can have fun betting on a darkhorse since a $10 bet would payout $1,510.

So it’s enticing to bet on underdogs and less exciting chasing chalk — a popular term for the betting favorite, especially when they’re at minus odds. Additionally, since getting the most favorable odds to win is advantageous, you should shop for the best odds for the American League Cy Young at all betting sites. Moreover, the MLB season is long, with ups and downs. Therefore, you must be vigilant and regularly check Cy Young odds.
