Before breaking down Brewers vs Padres odds for Monday’s opener of a three-game series at Petco Park, here’s a quick reminder of these franchises’ shared history: Both entered MLB together in 1969, with the Brewers spending their first year as the Seattle Pilots. And in 54 seasons since, neither has won a World Series — in fact, the franchises have combined for just three World Series appearances.
The good news for Brewers and Padres fans? Through the first quarter of the 2022 campaign, both squads look like legit threats to end their respective title droughts. Entering Monday, San Diego and Milwaukee sport MLB’s third- and fifth-best records, respectively. And both are in a groove right now, with the Brewers having won five of their last seven and the Padres returning home after capping a 7-2 road trip with four straight wins.

Milwaukee Brewers (26-15) vs San Diego Padres (27-14)
First Pitch/TV: 9:40 p.m. ET/MLB.TV
Moneyline: Padres -120/Brewers +100
Runline: Brewers (-1.5) +170/Padres (+1.5) -200
Total: 7.5 (Over -115/Under -105)
Pitching matchup: RHP Adrian Houser (3-4, 3.22 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) vs RHP Nick Martinez (2-2, 3.89 ERA, 1.33 WHIP)
Season series: First meeting. Milwaukee took last year’s season series 5-2, winning all three games at Petco Park in San Diego.
Did you know: Following their three-game weekend sweep of the Giants in San Francisco, the Padres overtaken the New York Mets and New York Yankees as baseball’s most profitable team. San Diego is at +9.61 units (meaning if you wagered $100 on every Padres game this season, you’d be up $961).
About the Brewers
Hits & Misses: Milwaukee’s three-game winning streak was halted in Sunday’s 8-2 home loss to the Nationals. Still, the Brewers arrive in San Diego on a 6-2 roll. They’ve posted two shutouts during this run and scored five-plus runs four times. Milwaukee went 8-1 on the road from April 12-May 6 but is just 3-5 in its last eight as a visitor. The Brewers are 5th in MLB in OPS (.729) and 6th in runs (4.78 per game). 1B Rowdy Tellez is tied for 4th in MLB with 32 RBI, and he’s for the team lead in homers with nine. On the mound, Milwaukee ninth in both team ERA (3.46) and WHIP (1.18), and fourth in opponents’ batting average (.219). The Brewers lead the NL Central by three games over the Cardinals.
Houser vs San Diego: Houser is coming off a gem against Atlanta, allowing just one unearned run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in six innings. However, he didn’t get any run support in a 3-0 loss. That strong showing followed two dreadful outings — both against the Reds — in which Houser surrendered a combined 12 runs (seven earned) in nine innings. The 29-year-old from Oklahoma has surrendered just one home run in 36.1 innings. Houser faced the Padres twice last year and gave up a combined two runs on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 9.2 innings. Milwaukee won both games (4-2 on the road, 6-5 at home).
Key injuries: SS Willy Adames (left ankle sprain) is on the 10-day injured list and is not expected to return until at least early June. Also, Milwaukee SP Freddy Peralta (shoulder) landed on the IL after being forced to leave Sunday’s start against Washington.
About the Padres
Hits & Misses: After a pair of one-run victories on Friday (8-7) and Saturday (2-1), San Diego thrashed the Giants 10-1 in Sunday’s series finale. 3B Manny Machado went 3-for-4 with three doubles and a triple, three runs and two RBI. Machado now leads MLB with a .374 batting average, and his 1.065 OPS is tied for second with Aaron Judge. Both trail only Mike Trout (1.133 OPS). Machado is a huge reason why the Padres have baseball’s third-best record, behind only the Yankees and Dodgers. San Diego, which hasn’t had SS Fernando Tatis (broken wrist) all season, trails L.A. by just a half-game in the NL West. The Friars own baseball’s best road record (16-7) but are a modest 10-7 at Petco Park.
Martinez vs Milwaukee: After six straight starts to being his career with San Diego, Martinez pitched out of the bullpen for the first time Wednesday in Philadelphia and yielded just two hits while striking out six in four innings. The right-hander’s most recent start was on May 11 at home against the Cubs, and he gave up five runs on four hits in four innings. He didn’t factor in the decision, as San Diego lost 7-5 at home. In his three starts prior to facing Chicago, Martinez was sharp, allowing a combined five runs in 16.2 innings (2.70 ERA). Martinez, who pitched four seasons for Texas (2014-17) before spending the next four campaigns in Japan, has never faced the Brewers.
Key injuries: In addition to Tatis, San Diego has five RPs on the 60-day IL. OF Matt Beaty (shoulder) hit the 10-day IL last week and is out indefinitely.
