BetMGM has released the odds for every NFL team to make (or miss) the playoffs in 2023. Some of these could raise some eyebrows. Others, not so much. Falling into the latter category, the San Francisco 49ers have the best odds to make the 2023 playoffs followed closely by the Kansas Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles. But who else is in the running as the 2023 season nears?
Let’s take a look at the odds below.

The ‘De Facto’ Surprises
If we read into the odds, there are 13 teams with a better than 50% chance to make the playoffs. John Ewing, who works in Data + PR at BetMGM, breaks them down below:
Most likely teams to MAKE NFL Playoffs in 2023 at @BetMGM
49ers -450
Chiefs -400
Bengals -350
Eagles -350
Bills -250
Jaguars -200
Cowboys -190
Saints -165
Lions -160
Jets -160
Ravens -150
Dolphins -120
Chargers -105— John Ewing (@johnewing) May 9, 2023
Among that group, the Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, and Detroit Lions could be labeled as the most surprising. Each of these teams has the benefit of playing in a “down” division with the competition rebuilding or experiencing problems of their own.
The first division we must examine is the NFC South. Not a single team had a winning record in this division last season. In addition, Tom Brady is now officially retired (we are pretty sure it’s for real this time), leaving the Bucs in a vulnerable situation. This may leave the door open for the Saints. They recently added Derek Carr as their new franchise QB which could lead them to the playoffs after missing the past two years.
The Jaguars won the AFC South last year as the only team with a winning record in the division. You could argue that Jacksonville improved in the offseason while the other three teams are rebuilding. This pick may come as no surprise for many after Trevor Lawrence’s breakout season in 2022. Another major highlight heading into next season is their first-round pick, right tackle Anton Harrison, who needs to play up to his potential if Jacksonville wants to live up to these odds
Three From The AFC East?
The AFC East is a fascinating case from top to bottom. The Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets all appear as the most likely teams to make the playoffs in 2023. Each of them has a greater than 50% chance to make it according to the odds.
If this holds true, it means that the AFC East would need to claim two of three wild card spots in the conference.
Teams that look to rival this scenario from happening are the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers as they occupy the bottom portion of the playoff potential list. With Baltimore’s recent signing of QB Lamar Jackson, the Ravens noticed their odds to win the Super Bowl (and make the playoffs) spike.
Also, the Chargers have found consistent year-to-year success, at least in the regular season. With all of this, there could be a battle brewing to spoil the AFC East’s overrepresentation in the playoffs.
