Starting Pitchers
- Cubs: LHP Drew Smyly (3-1, 3.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP)
Smyly has been a quality starter for the Cubs so far this season, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of his last six outings. That includes only 1 earned run and 5 hits allowed across 13.1 innings in two starts against the mighty LA Dodgers.
- Twins: RHP Sonny Gray (4-0, 1.35 ERA, 1.10 WHIP)
Gray has been fantastic to begin 2023. That’s especially true when he’s pitching at Target Field, as the right-hander has allowed just two earned runs in 25 innings at home this year. That includes starts against quality offenses like the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.

Twins vs. Cubs Predictions
We touched on this in the starting pitcher section above, but both hurlers have gotten off to a strong start this season. That should continue on Friday.
Smyly should be able to lock up a lefty-heavy Minnesota lineup. The main concerns are right-handed bats Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton. Outside of a clutch RBI double yesterday, Correa has struggled with a .191 average so far. Buxton has not recorded a hit in his last 20 at-bats.

On the other hand, Gray is more than capable of pinning down the Cubs. The Minnesota pitcher has only allowed six earned runs across 40 innings pitched this season. At home, Gray has given up just two earned runs in 25 innings.
Even when he’s not throwing his best stuff, Gray knows how to get outs and limit damage. If his stuff is moving like he wants it to, then the guy is nearly unhittable.
All signs point to the under on Friday.
