Golf betting heats up again with PGA Championship odds on the board, as the second major of the year hits the final round at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The last time Southern Hills hosted the PGA Championship was in 2007. The winner: Tiger Woods. Knock you over with a feather, right?

But it’s 2022 now. Woods scrambled to barely make the cut, struggled mightily Saturday, and had to bow out for Sunday’s final round due to injury. Still, there are storylines aplenty, most notably unheralded Chilean Mito Pereira as the favorite in odds to win the PGA Championship.

The SuperBook’s Neil Fitzroy provided Props.com with insights on Round 4 PGA Championship futures odds and action. Check back for updates throughout the weekend.

UPDATE 11 P.M. ET SATURDAY: A lot of people who had never heard of Mito Pereira prior to the PGA Championship might be quite familiar with him by late afternoon Sunday. Pereira shot a steady 1-under 69 Saturday for a 9-under 201 total, good for a three-stroke lead.

If Pereira keeps it up, a scant few who took a pre-tournament shot on the 27-year-old will be counting their cash.

“He is a small loser for us. We have several tickets out there at 200/1 and 150/1,” Fitzroy said.

Indeed, Pereira was a 200/1 long shot when The SuperBook first posted its PGA Championship odds, in December. On Wednesday night, prior to Round 1, he could still be had at +15,000 (150/1). And even Thursday night, after a semi-under-the-radar 68, bettors could nab him at +5000.

Compared with his current favorite’s price of +150, that 50/1 looks mighty juicy now. But while Pereira’s big move might be a surprise to many, Fitzroy isn’t that shocked.

“Pereira hasn’t come out of nowhere. He earned a three-win promotion off the Korn Ferry Tour to the PGA Tour last year,” Fitzroy said. “Pereira started racking up top-10s as soon as he arrived to the big show. He lost a seven-way bronze-medal playoff at the Olympics. He’s a darling of the golf analytics crowd.”

But will that crowd be rewarded Sunday?

“In general, the 54-hole leader hasn’t been able to convert much the last two years on the PGA Tour. It’s just an awful spot to be in, especially for someone who has never been in this position,” Fitzroy said, noting it’s not just the pressure of finishing, but finishing in a major. “From a betting perspective, you want to have the chasers. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Best of the Rest

Matt Fitzpatrick wasn’t the pre-tournament long shot that Pereira was, but Fitzpatrick was certainly a dark horse on the PGA Championship odds board. Fitzpatrick opened +8000 and closed +4000 pre-tournament. After a solid 3-under 67 Saturday for a 6-under 204 total, Fitzpatrick is the +350 second choice to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.

Will Zalatoris, the +240 favorite prior to Round 3, had a bumpy Saturday round of 3-over 73. Still, he’s tied for second with Fitzpatrick at 204, and Zalatoris is the +400 third choice to win.

Cameron Young carded a second straight 67 for a 5-under 205 total, and he’s the +800 fourth choice heading to Sunday. Young is yet another dark horse, opening +8000, starting the tourney at +6000 and now into the +800 fourth choice.

“Fitzpatrick is an excellent result for us. Young is a good result, but not nearly as good as Fitzpatrick. Zalatoris is a small winner for us,” Fitzroy said. “We are rooting against Justin Thomas, Stewart Cink and Pereira. We’ll take anyone else.”

Thomas and Cink would need to have monster Sundays to get there. JT stubbed his toe Saturday, shooting 4-over 74 to fall from third place to a tie for seventh at 2-under 208. Cink, who celebrated his 49th birthday Saturday, shot 71 and is also at 208, seven shots behind Pereira.

Woods Forced to Walk Away

Woods made the cut, but that’s about all his body would allow for this weekend. He had five straight bogeys in Saturday’s round, from hole Nos. 9-13, en route to a 9-over 79. Woods then withdrew from the final round. That impacted two popular tourney matchup props at The SuperBook.

“Our two biggest tourney matchup decisions both involve Tiger. We need him vs. Patrick Reed, and in the other one, we need Rickie Fowler vs Tiger,” Fitzroy said Friday night.

With Woods having to bow out, Reed and Fowler backers get the wins in those matchups.
