Chiefs vs. Commanders Trends

Let’s take a look at some relevant betting trends for the Chiefs vs. Commanders as well as the NFL preseason in general:

  • The Commanders lost their first preseason game 23-21 vs. Carolina.
  • The Chiefs lost their first preseason game 19-14 at Chicago.
  • Washington HC Ron Rivera is 1-3 in the preseason with the Commanders.
  • Kansas City HC Andy Reid is 17-15 in the preseason with the Chiefs.
  • Underdogs are 53.7% against the spread in the NFL preseason in the previous ten years.
  • As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings reports that 92% of tickets and 62% of the money are on the favorite Chiefs against the spread.
  • DraftKings also reports that 41% of betting tickets and 82% of the handle have selected Over 44 total points.

Depth Chart Questions In Washington

For the Commanders, we’ll likely see Carson Wentz start at quarterback. He’ll be followed by Taylor Heinke and then rookie Sam Howell.

Washington HC Ron Rivera said he would like to have the first string playing most of the first half. However, as the team deals with a ton of injuries (especially on the offensive line) that likely won’t happen. We saw Wentz play for three drives in Week 1, and he should play the same amount (maybe less), as there’s no reason to have him out with second and third-stringers.

On the other hand, you better believe everyone will pay attention to how the Commanders’ snaps and carries will be divided at running back. Antonio Gibson seems out of the coaching staff’s good graces as rookie RB Brian Robinson has been getting reps with the first team. Meanwhile, Gibson has been seen with the third and even special teams.

How the Commanders set up the running backs could indicate who will be the starter come Week 1.

The New Chiefs Offense Is Playing Well Early

The Chiefs will likely have Patrick Mahomes and the first unit out for maybe one drive (or two), just like they did last week.

After Mahomes, the quarterback depth chart is still wide open. Long-time veteran Chad Henne also saw one series himself last week. Then sophomore Shane Buechele and rookie Dustin Crum took over the signal caller position for Kansas City.

One thing Mahomes recently said is he likes the way his new wide receiver group has developed in training camp. The Chiefs have basically an all-new receiving corps, and he likes how some of the new guys like Justin Watson and rookie Skyy Moore have been in training camp and the first preseason game.

The running situation seems to be much clearer as Clyde Edwards-Helaire should remain the RB1, but rookie seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco’s stock has skyrocketed with an impressive training camp. Another great performance this week and he’ll likely get that backup role in this offense.

Chiefs vs. Commanders Predictions

It looks like the Chiefs have a clear understanding of what their depth at each position will look like this season. The Commanders will likely be sitting a lot of players as they deal with injuries.

When you look at the overall talent the Chiefs are the better team, even with the first unit playing very little. The best bet is to go with the consensus and grab Kansas City while laying the five points.

Prediction 1: Chiefs -5 | -110 at DraftKings Sportsbook

Looking at the total, most bettors are going with the Under, but the heavy hitters are siding with the Over. Dare we call it sharp action on the Over? It seems like the Chiefs are capable of holding their end of the scoring bargain as it pertains to the Over. With the starting job of the Commanders in a few positions not locked down, we’re going to see a lot of these guys bring their best in every series. The Over is a strong pick.

Prediction 2: Over 44 total points | -110 at DraftKings Sportsbook
