The Lions are large favorites at home against the Raiders. Both teams had embarrassing losses last week. Still, that was out of the ordinary for Detroit, and Jared Goff has played much better at home in his tenure with the Lions. His passing success at home should trickle to his pass-catchers, making two receiving props for his teammates enticing. The Raiders are underdogs and will almost certainly have to pass to keep up, enhancing the receiving outlook for an emerging rookie in our Lions vs. Raiders player props below.

Monday Night Football Player Props: Week 8

Here’s a trio of Lions vs. Raiders player props I like for Monday’s primetime matchup:

Sam LaPorta Over 44.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

Sam LaPorta is making the transition from college to professional football look like child’s play. He’s averaging 53.9 receiving yards per game, with a median of 52.

He’s been a favorite of Goff’s this year, ranking second on the Lions in targets (49). LaPorta’s usage is already outstanding. Still, he could be used more frequently this week.

Amon-Ra St. Brown was added to the injury report on Sunday afternoon with an illness. If he’s inactive, LaPorta would move up the pecking order. Moreover, ARSB could be less effective if he plays through the illness. Thus, LaPorta should be an active part of Detroit’s passing attack this week.

Jahmyr Gibbs Over 27.5 Receiving Yards (-115)

Jahmyr Gibbs could also have an enhanced role in the passing attack if St. Brown is out. There should be plenty of meat on the bone for him even if Detroit’s No. 1 wideout plays, though. According to RotoViz’s pace app, the Lions have passed on 57% of their 87 plays in a neutral game script since Week 4.

Gibbs’s pass-catching chops were listed as a strength on his scouting reports after he had 44 receptions and 444 receiving yards in 12 games at Alabama last year, per Pro Football Focus (PFF). Gibbs has flashed his potential in that department as a rookie, peaking at nine receptions and 58 receiving yards last week. The rookie also had seven receptions for 39 receiving yards in Week 2.

David Montgomery is out this week, paving the way for Gibbs to be Detroit’s featured back again. According to PFF, Gibbs ran 62 routes versus only 11 for Craig Reynolds in two games without Montgomery this season. Finally, as I noted in the intro, Goff has played markedly better at home than on the road, enhancing Gibbs’s receiving outlook tonight.

Michael Mayer Over 21.5 Receiving Yards (-113)

Michael Mayer was operating behind Austin Hooper through five games, running 67 routes versus 99. However, since Week 6, Mayer ran 46 routes compared to 23 for Hooper.

The rookie tight end had only two receptions for 13 yards last week. Yet, Brian Hoyer was the starter, and Aidan O’Connell relieved him. Mayer had highs for targets (six), receptions (five), and receiving yards (75) when Jimmy Garoppolo was healthy in Week 6.

Jimmy G is back this week, meaning Mayer can build on his breakout performance after a letdown last week. The matchup is good, too. Detroit has allowed 44.0 receiving yards per game to tight ends since Week 4.

The rookie tight end should also benefit from a probable negative game script for the Raiders. Furthermore, teams have attacked the Lions through the air when in a neutral game script, passing at a 61% clip on 74 plays in a neutral game script since Week 4. Mayer can clear the low bar for his receiving prop, even operating behind Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers in the passing-game hierarchy.
