Dubbs Anderson, former PGA Tour caddy and host of the Props Golf podcast, is back following a solid betting performance at the Scottish Open. Reaching for those “plus-money peaches,” Anderson offers his top Open Championship picks, best bets, props, and sleepers this time around. The event starts the morning of Thursday, July 14 — so read up and get those picks in.

In addition to this betting preview, Anderson will release an episode late Friday night in which he will offer his favorite wagering opportunities heading into the weekend, so be sure to subscribe to Props Golf on Youtube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.

With that, here are Dubbs’ top Open Championship picks and best bets across the golf betting markets.

Odds updated as of 10 a.m. ET on July 12.

Open Championship Picks

The Open Championship will be played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Colin Morikawa won this event in 2021, and he holds 30-1 odds to claim the top spot this time around. Recent winners of this tournament also include Shane Lowry (2019), Francesco Molinari (2018), and Jordan Spieth (2017).

As Dubbs noted on the podcast, The final major of the year will require an all-around performance on this shorter course. We could see a birdie shootout. The Old Course at St. Andrews is the oldest course in the world and requires a strong short game along with navigation of potential wind. With that in mind, strokes gained around the green, strokes gained on approach, and strokes gained putting are the most important metrics to monitor heading into this event.

The following are abbreviated, edited excerpts of Anderson’s analysis from his latest episode of Props Golf, which he hosts twice weekly. For full analysis, you can view the full episode at the bottom of this article.

Justin Thomas Outright Winner (+2200)

Best odds available: +2200 at BetMGM Sportsbook

Dubbs’ Take: Thomas is coming off a win at the PGA Championship, which takes a lot of pressure off going into the year’s final major. An underrated stat for Thomas this weekend could be the fact that he’s seventh in sand saves on the PGA Tour. This puts him in a strong position to capitalize on the major short game factors that the Old Course at St. Andrews requires.

Let’s consider some of Thomas’ other PGA rankings up to this point:

  • 15th in strokes gained off the tee
  • 6st in strokes gained on approach
  • 28th in strokes gained around the green

The 15-time winner on the PGA Tour can clearly run the table with or without good weather conditions, so look for him to be a strong contender for the win this weekend.

Jordan Spieth Outright Winner (+1800)

Best odds available: +1800 at BetMGM Sportsbook

Dubbs’ Take: Spieth is “links golf personified” in Dubbs’ opinion. There is no player better at navigating a course where you need a solid short game, but also have to use your imagination to put up a solid score. All the stats point to a winning performance for Spieth even though his odds may not be as enticing.

He is 41st in strokes gained on approach, 25th in strokes gained around the greens, and most importantly, played eight Open Championships and made eight cuts. He even converted one of those performances to a 2017 win, so the former champ is in the discussion when looking to bet an outright winner this weekend.

Max Homa Top 40 Finish (-110)

Best odds available: -110 at PointsBet Sportsbook

Dubbs’ Take: This could be the play of the week, according to Dubbs. Homa is coming off a solid performance at The Scottish Open and is no stranger to winning events on the PGA Tour, where he has two trophies in his cabinet.

Sure, this would be Homa’s first win at a major, but we aren’t looking for an outright winner here. We just need Homa to come through with solid play, hang around, and cruise to a top 40 finish.

That seems pretty reasonable, and the -110 odds at PointsBet Sportsbook look especially enticing.
