Most Valuable Squad: England
England is coming off a fourth-place finish in World Cup 2018. This was their best result since a fourth-place finish in 1980 and a World Cup title in 1966. More recently, in the Euro 2020 championship game, Italy edged them out in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. However, England’s form has suffered ever since that moment. Despite that, they are still the fifth-ranked team in the FIFA rankings going into World Cup 2022.
It’s worth noting that England also has the highest team value entering World Cup 2022 at 1.29 billion euros, according to Transfer Mrkt. By “value”, we mean the projected sum for a player in the transfer window. This metric is often associated with overall talent, so it gives us a glimpse into the quality of each squad.
England has 10 players worth more than 70 million euros, with midfielder Phil Foden as the highest-valued player on the roster at 110 million euros. It is time for England to put their money where their mouth is and cash in this team value with a stellar World Cup 2022 performance.

Can Belgium Live Up To No. 2 Ranking?
Belgium is the true outlier as they sit second in the FIFA rankings but are ranked 9th (+1700) in World Cup 2022 odds at FanDuel. The contrast is striking (no pun intended) as the Belgian squad is led by arguably the best midfielder in the world, Kevin De Bruyne.
Valued at 80 million euros, De Bruyne carries the weight of an entire country as he more than doubles all other player values on the roster. Coming off a third-place finish in 2018 is added pressure for an undervalued team with overachieving aspirations to win their first title since 1970.
Is Portugal Underrated?
Portugal has a unique situation entering World Cup 2022 as they are ranked fifth in team value but eighth (+1700) in FanDuel World Cup 2022 odds. So, where is the disconnect? If you look around, you’ll see dollar signs at every position. 75 million euros for Ruben Dias at center back. 70 million euros for Joao Cancelo at right back. Not to mention arguably the most notable player in the world at forward, Christiano Ronaldo.
The talent is most certainly there, but Portugal needs to do better than the round of 16 this time around to assure the doubters. This team has too much talent only to have their best finish be third place in 1966. This may be their year.
