Angels vs Yankees Odds: Syndergaard An Underdog In The Bronx

After a sizzling start to the 2022 campaign, the Los Angeles Angels are stuck in their first extended funk of the season. So it’s not exactly the ideal time to be visiting Yankee Stadium to face baseball’s best team. But even though Angels vs Yankees odds reveal the Halos as decided underdogs in Tuesday’s series opener, the visitors aren’t without hope.

That’s because L.A. is handing the ball to its best pitcher — no, not Shohei Ohtani, but Noah Syndergaard. The big right-hander has been outstanding in his first season with the Angels. So much so that, after missing most of the past two seasons with elbow issues, Syndergaard has to be considered the leading candidate for AL Comeback Player of the Year.

Can Thor tame Aaron Judge and the powerful Yankees lineup and snap his team’s season-long five-game losing skid? Or will New York continue a lengthy run of dominance against the Angels?

Props.com breaks down Angels vs Yankees odds for Tuesday’s marquee MLB matchup.

First Pitch/TV: 7:05 p.m. ET/TBS & MLB.TV

Betting stats: Los Angeles, which had been one of MLB’s most profitable teams in the early going, now ranks 15th in the betting standings (-0.46 units). New York is third (+5.86 units).

Pitching matchup: RHP Noah Syndergaard (4-2, 3.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) vs LHP Jordan Montgomery (0-1, 3.30 ERA, 1.06 WHIP)

Season series: First meeting. Los Angeles won last year’s seven-game battle, 4-3.

Did you know: Last year was just the second time since 2009 (12 seasons) that the Angels won a season series against New York. During this stretch, the Yankees are 56-38 against Los Angeles, including 34-14 at Yankee Stadium.

About the Angels

Hits & Misses: Los Angeles spent Monday’s off-day flight to New York licking its wounds after getting swept by Toronto in a four-game weekend series at home. Throw in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday and the Angels have dropped five in row, which is part of a 3-9 slump that dates to May 16. The pitching staff bears most of the blame for the current skid, having surrendered 68 runs during the 12-game stretch (5.67 per game). L.A., which started the season 23-11, is now four games behind Houston in the AL West. Superstar OF Mke Trout continues to do his part, as he’s batting .310 with 13 homers, 28 RBI, 37 runs and an MLB-best 1.063 OPS. As a team, L.A. ranks second in MLB in OPS (.748) and fourth in both runs per game overall (4.80) and on the road (5.05).

Syndergaard vs New York: Syndergaard allowed one run on four hits in eight innings last Tuesday, beating the Rangers 5-3 at home. It was the first time since May 14, 2019, that the right-hander pitched at least eight innings. That followed his worst (and shortest) outing of the season — also against the Rangers, but in Texas — in which he yielded six runs (four earned) in 2/3 of an inning. Syndergaard has been much better at home (3-0, 1.48 ERA) than on the road (1-2, 5.93 ERA). He faced the Yankees twice during his time with the Mets, allowing one run in five innings of a 7-5 victory in 2018 and five runs in six innings of a 5-0 loss in 2015. Syndergaard has 12 strikeouts and no walks in 11 innings against New York.

Key injuries: 3B Anthony Rendon (wrist) hit the injured list Saturday and is likely out until late June. 2B David Fletcher (groin) remains on the IL and isn’t expected back until at least mid-July. C Kurt Suzuki (neck) is day-to-day, as is RP Jimmy Herget (finger)

About the Yankees

Hits & Misses: New York also had Memorial Day off after splitting a four-game series in Tampa Bay, losing the final two contests 3-1 and 4-2. The Yankees, who have lost three in a row just once this season, are 4-5 in their last nine games. That said, they continue to lead Tampa Bay by five games in the AL East and are tied with the Dodgers for MLB’s best record. Judge still leads MLB with 18 home runs (three more than any other player), and his 1.045 OPS is second only to Trout. He’s also tied for sixth with 37 RBI. As good as Judge has been, New York has been led by a pitching staff that ranks 3rd in team ERA (2.95); tied for 1st in both WHIP (1.08) and opponents’ batting average (.217); 1st in walks allowed (118); and 4th in strikeouts (444).

Montgomery vs Los Angeles: Montgomery yielded two runs on four hits in six innings in last Tuesday’s home start against Baltimore. He didn’t get a decision as the Yankees rallied for a 7-6 extra-innings win. Montgomery has pitched at least five innings in seven of his nine starts and allowed three runs or fewer all nine outings (including two runs or fewer seven times). In the southpaw’s lone start against the Angels back in June 2017, he surrendered two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings en route to an 8-4 victory at home.

Key injuries: 3B Josh Donaldson and OF/DH Giancarlo Stanton (calf) are on the IL and not expected to return for at least another week. Closer Aroldis Chapman (Achilles) also is on the IL and out indefinitely.
