Franz Wagner First Basket Scorer (+575)

The Magic entered this season with higher expectations than they have had in quite some time.

They added Desmond Bane this offseason, and they already had a blossoming young superstar in Paolo Banchero. Add in some solid role players in a weak conference, and this looked like a team that could challenge for a top spot in the East.

Unfortunately, they’re not off to a particularly good start. They’ve won just one of their first four games, and their offense remains a major weakness. They’re merely 26th in the league in offensive efficiency, and it’s tough to win games consistently when you struggle to put the ball in the basket. It’s still early, but it’s possible that the market was too high on this team entering the year.

The good news is that the Magic have been excellent in the first-basket department. They’ve won the tip in all four games this season, and they’ve scored first in three of them.

That gives them a sizable edge over the Pistons, who have yet to score first this season. They’ve won just one of four tip-offs, so the Magic are a solid bet to get the ball first.

Wagner has been the team’s clear No. 1 option to start games. He’s scored the team’s first basket in two of four outings, and both have also been the first basket of the game. He’s averaged 1.0 of the team’s first 3.0 shot attempts, which is tied for the best mark on the squad. Wagner is priced as low as +494 at some locations, so getting him at +575 feels like a nice value.

Donte DiVincenzo First Basket Scorer (+800)

The Timberwolves are also dealing with a bit of early adversity. They’ve made it to back-to-back Western Conference Finals, but they’re going to have to survive for at least the next week without Anthony Edwards.

Edwards has become one of the best guards in basketball, and he’s averaged 36.0 points per 36 minutes through three games this season. With him out of the lineup, the rest of the team is going to have to pick up the slack.

DiVincenzo struggled in his first year in Minnesota, but he has the potential to carry some of the load with Edwards sidelined. He’s seen a slight usage bump with Edwards off the floor this season, and he has the potential to play more minutes as well.

DiVincenzo has been a solid first-basket target for the Wolves even with Edwards active this season. He’s scored the team’s first basket in two of four games, and he has one first score overall.

The Timberwolves draw a matchup vs. the Lakers on Wednesday, who have won just one of four tips this season. Rudy Gobert gives Minnesota a nice edge in that department, so Minnesota stands out as a solid team to target.
