One of the most popular bets in the Super Bowl is on the coin toss. It is a staple in every year’s marquee matchup and has some recent head-turning variance that we’ll go over before the Chiefs take on the 49ers in this year’s Big Game.

So let’s dive into the Super Bowl coin toss odds, history, and other notable trends before you decide which sportsbook to place your bet at.

Super Bowl Coin Toss Odds

You will want to head over to DraftKings to place this bet since they have +100 on both sides. Other major sportsbooks like BetMGM have -105 on both sides.

It just doesn’t make sense to lay odds that are worse than +100 on a coin toss, so that’s why DraftKings is our preferred choice for this Super Bowl prop.

Coin toss props are currently available in AZ, DC, IN, IA, IL, LA, MD, MI, MS, NM, NV, NJ, NY, ON, OR, PA, PR, WV and WY.

While a majority of sports betting states allow coin toss-related bets, Colorado and Ohio do not.

Who Calls Super Bowl Coin Toss 2024?

The NFC and AFC alternate calling it each year. Last year, the Eagles (NFC) made the call. So this year, the Chiefs (AFC) will choose heads or tails at the start of Super Bowl LVIII.

Keep in mind, the Chiefs have been in the Super Bowl three of the last five years and called tails in two of those games.

While this may not be a totally convincing trend, there is history that could glean a bit more into what side of the coin Kansas City will pick this year.

Super Bowl Coin Toss History

The Super Bowl coin toss has landed tails in 7 of the last 10 contests. Here’s how that breaks down:

  • 2023: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs (Tails)
  • 2022: LA Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals (Heads)
  • 2021: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Heads)
  • 2020: Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers (Tails)
  • 2019: New England Patriots vs. LA Rams (Tails)
  • 2018: New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles (Heads)
  • 2017: Atlanta Falcons vs. New England Patriots (Tails)
  • 2016: Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos (Tails)
  • 2015: Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots (Tails)
  • 2014: Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos (Tails)

Last year, the Chiefs were also the first team since the 2014 Seahawks to win the coin toss and the game.

What Is The Super Bowl Coin Toss Curse?

For those who are superstitious, there is a bit of a coin toss curse going around. Here it is: eight of the previous nine coin toss winners were on the losing side of the Super Bowl.

It was eight in a row (looking like a true curse — for those who believe in such things) until the Chiefs managed to break the streak last year.

Big Bet Alert: $100,000 On Tails

One bettor decided to go big this year. Caesars Sportsbook has reported a $100,000 bet placed on tails at -105, which would pay $95,238.10 if the coin lands correctly.

Interestingly, the bettor took -105 odds compared to the +100 payout we referenced at DraftKings Sportsbook above. However, Caesars has much higher limits on the Super Bowl coin toss prop, which is why the bet was placed over there.

Unless you are backing up the Brink’s Truck to bet on the coin toss (probably not a great idea to begin with), DraftKings Sportsbook is where you’ll want to look for this prop.

Tails = Popular Betting Choice

It’s also worth noting that ‘tails’ is slightly more popular per BetMGM as of Feb. 1.

According to that report, 51% of betting tickets and 57% of the money is on tails. While this support isn’t quite to the tune of $100k, the public seems to be in a “tails never fails” kind of mindset. Are you?
