Week 2 NFL Injury Report: Quarterback

Brock Purdy, 49ers

Status: DOUBTFUL (toe/shouder)

Purdy looks to be all but certain to miss Sunday’s game against the Saints, and potentially up to five weeks overall, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The fourth-year quarterback sustained both his turf toe and shoulder injuries in the first half of the Week 1 win over the Seahawks.

The development tees up Mac Jones, the oft-maligned 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, for a multi-game run under center.

Jones was serviceable as Trevor Lawrence’s late-season fill-in in Jacksonville during his lone Jaguars campaign in 2024, completing 65.4 percent of his passes for 1,533 yards and an 8:6 TD:INT while adding 84 rushing yards on 23 rush attempts across seven games.

Jones will be going into his first start in a 49ers uniform short-handed, however, as George Kittle is already on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Additionally, Jauan Jennings, who is the presumptive No. 1 receiver at the moment with Brandon Aiyuk still unavailable due to last season’s knee injury, failed to practice both Wednesday and Thursday due to a shoulder injury, leaving his status for Week 2 firmly up in the air.

Wide Receiver Injuries

 Jordan Addison, Vikings

Status: OUT (suspension)

In Addison’s ongoing absence for Sunday night’s game against the Falcons, Jalen Nailor is slated to operate as Minnesota’s No. 2 receiver.

Adam Thielen was thought to be primed for that role going into the Week 1 matchup against the Bears on Monday night, but Nailor outsnapped his veteran teammate by a 44-28 margin and ran 22 routes to Thielen’s 15 while finishing with a 1-28-0 line on three targets.

Thielen failed to bring in his only target while essentially operating as the No. 3 receiver in what was J.J. McCarthy’s regular-season NFL debut, but both players could be due for more volume with the second-year signal-caller getting some first-game jitters out of the way.

However, the matchup comes against a Falcons team that did a reasonably effective job against the Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield in Week 1, allowing three TDs but limiting him to 167 passing yards.

Drake London, Falcons

Status: QUESTIONABLE (shoulder)

Week 2 NFL Injury Report: Drake London is questionable.

London suffered a shoulder injury before the Falcons’ final drive against the Buccaneers in Week 1, and he’s opened the week with two limited practices ahead of Sunday night’s aforementioned matchup against the Vikings.

Atlanta’s top receiver appears to have a reasonable chance of suiting up, and Friday’s participation level should shed more light on that scenario.

London finished with eight receptions for 55 yards on a whopping 15 targets in Week 1.

If he can’t play, second-year QB Michael Penix Jr. could be facing the prospect of operating with Ray-Ray McCloud and either Casey Washington (concussion) or Jamal Agnew. Darnell Mooney (shoulder) also remains out.

Any London absence – irrespective of Mooney’s availability – would seemingly lead to even more receiving work for star running back Bijan Robinson, who reached the 100-yard mark through the air in Week 1.

Tight end Kyle Pitts, who brought in seven of eight targets for 59 yards in the opener, would also likely be due for a boost in volume.

Jaylen Waddle, Dolphins

Status: QUESTIONABLE (shoulder)

It’s no surprise that a Dolphins player is on the Week 2 NFL Injury Report.

Waddle has put in back-to-back limited practices to open Week 2 prep for a divisional clash with the Patriots on Sunday in South Florida.

The 2021 first-round pick fell victim to the malaise that afflicted the entire Dolphins air attack in Week 1 against the Colts, finishing with a paltry 4-30-0 line on five targets across 29 snaps and 21 routes.

Given his limited participation thus far, Waddle appears to have at least a 50/50 shot of suiting up versus New England.

If he were to sit out, speedy Malik Washington and veteran Nick Westbrook-Ikhine would potentially share No. 2 receiver snaps behind Tyreek Hill against a Pats defense that will once again be without Christian Gonzalez (hamstring).

In Waddle’s Week 16-17 absence last season, Hill generated a 12-134-1 line on 16 targets versus the 49ers and Browns.

Chris Godwin, Buccaneers

Status: QUESTIONABLE (ankle)

Godwin got in a limited practice on Thursday, as he continues to work back from last season’s dislocated ankle.

Notably, the Buccaneers don’t play until Monday night on the road against the Texans, giving the veteran receiver some time to try and make what would still be considered a surprising Week 2 debut.

In Godwin’s absence in the opener against the Falcons, Mike Evans and rookie first-round pick Emeka Egbuka combined for a 9-118-2 line, with both touchdowns going on Egbuka’s ledger.

The Ohio State product looked more than ready for his first taste of regular-season action against an NFL secondary, and his success came on a day when Mayfield was held to under 200 passing yards.

The two wideouts would once again lead Tampa Bay’s air attack if Godwin remains sidelined.

Additionally, it’s likely fair to say Egbuka would still retain a robust role if Godwin played, as the veteran wideout would almost certainly be on some form of snap limit in what would be his first taste of game action in nearly a calendar year.

Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers

Status: OUT (PUP, knee)

Jauan Jennings, 49ers

Status: QUESTIONABLE (shoulder)

As alluded to in Purdy’s entry, Aiyuk remains out this week, while Jennings appears to be trending toward a game-time decision in a best-case scenario after missing the first two practices of the week.

Jennings was on the field for 47 snaps against the Seahawks in Week 1 and contributed a modest 2-16-0 line on five targets while running just 22 routes before exiting with the shoulder issue in the fourth quarter.

Jennings’ middling production notably came with Kittle exiting in the first half with the hamstring injury that’s now going to cause him to miss at least the next four games.

Ricky Pearsall was the beneficiary of primarily Kittle’s absence, as he finished with a 4-108-0 line on seven targets while running 33 routes.

If Jennings is also sidelined Sunday, Pearsall will be one of the last weapons standing for San Francisco, with the caveat that he’s projected to be catching passes from Jones and not Purdy.

Tight End Injuries

George Kittle, 49ers

Status: Out (foot)

As mentioned in Jennings’ entry, Kittle is out for at least the next four games due to his Week 1 hamstring injury.

In addition to Pearsall seemingly benefiting from the star tight end’s early exit in that game, Christian McCaffrey also finished the 17-13 win over Seattle with 10 targets and will likely be due for a similar workload through the air in Week 2, especially if Jennings also sits out.

Meanwhile, reserve tight end Jake Tonges drew some headlines for his play after Kittle’s departure, finishing with a 3-15-1 line on three targets.

Tonges ran just 15 routes, but he now projects as the full-time top pass-catching option at the position over Luke Farrell beginning with Sunday’s matchup against a Saints team that allowed an 8-74 line on 12 targets to Arizona TEs in Week 1.

Brock Bowers, Raiders

Status: QUESTIONABLE (knee):

Bowers saw a breakout Week 1 performance (5-103-0) against the Patriots.

His day was interrupted by his second-half knee issue, which the star tight end later insisted wouldn’t have prevented him from reentering the game if not for the training and coaching staff wanting to exercise extra caution.

Nevertheless, Bowers didn’t participate in any drills during Thursday’s practice, which was the first official one for the Raiders ahead of a Monday night Week 2 AFC West showdown against the Chargers.

That could certainly be an extension of Pete Carroll and co. playing it very safe with their star tight end, but it will be interesting to monitor Bowers’ participation levels on Friday and Saturday.

Needless to say, a Bowers absence would create ample opportunity for other pass catchers on Las Vegas’ roster. Jakobi Meyers would potentially be in line for the biggest boost and already opened the season recording an 8-97-0 line on 10 targets versus his old Pats squad.

Tre Tucker and rookie Dont’e Thornton would also be in line for an increase in workload to some degree, and rookie first-round pick Ashton Jeanty could also see some extra targets out of the backfield as the Raiders look to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.

Then, 2023 second-round pick Michael Mayer would be well-suited to serve as the top pass-catching option at tight end. Mayer put together an efficient four receptions for 38 yards on four targets over just 16 routes while helping fill in for Bowers in the second half in Week 1.
