#5 Los Angeles Rams @ #4 Carolina Panthers

  • Kickoff: 4:30 PM ET | TV: FOX
  • Spread: Rams -10.5 | Moneyline: Rams -620, Panthers +460 | Total: O/U 46.5

This is the “how did we get here?” game of the weekend. The Carolina Panthers (8-9) backed into the playoffs as the NFC South champion, becoming the first team in NFL history to host a playoff game with a losing record.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams (12-5) are led by the ageless Matthew Stafford, who just put together one of the best seasons of his career—4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions. That’s video game numbers.

Stafford is cooking. He led the NFL in both passing yards and touchdowns this season, and he’s got weapons for days—Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams, and with Davante Adams expected back in the mix, this offense is scary. The Panthers’ defense has been solid at times, but asking them to contain this offense for 60 minutes is a tall order.

Bryce Young has shown flashes in Year 2, finishing with 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He’s not the bust everyone thought he was after Year 1. The Panthers also have home-field advantage, and we’ve seen wild upsets in these low-seed home games before. This is a massive opportunity for Carolina to shock the world.

Maybe it’s time for the NFL to rethink playoff seeding? Keep in mind, Carolina did in fact defeat the Rams earlier this season.

#7 Green Bay Packers @ #2 Chicago Bears

  • Kickoff: 8:00 PM ET | TV: Amazon Prime Video
  • Spread: Packers -1.5 | Moneyline: Packers -110, Bears -106 | Total: O/U 45.5

NFC North rivalry game. Playoff implications. Prime time. This is what it’s all about. The Chicago Bears (11-6) earned the #2 seed behind the breakout season of Caleb Williams, who threw for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions in his second year.

The Green Bay Packers (9-7-1) limped into the playoffs but got a massive boost when they traded for Micah Parsons in August. Unfortunately, Parsons tore his ACL in Week 15 and is done for the year.

Jordan Love has been solid this season—3,381 yards, 23 touchdowns, 6 interceptions. He’s got a live arm and can extend plays with his legs. The Packers also have the playoff experience advantage, and they’ve won big games in hostile environments before. He’s also battled injuries, and he might have to knock some rust off.

Caleb Williams has been electric in Year 2. The offense runs through him, and he’s got weapons in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and TE Colston Loveland. Chicago’s defense has been gashed at times though.

At home, in primetime, with a rabid fanbase behind them, this Bears team is dangerous. Without Micah Parsons, Green Bay’s pass rush takes a major hit, and that’s a problem when you’re facing a QB like Williams, who can carve you up if you don’t get pressure.

#6 Buffalo Bills @ #3 Jacksonville Jaguars

  • Kickoff: 1:00 PM ET | TV: CBS
  • Spread: Bills -1.5 | Moneyline: Bills -116, Jaguars -102 | Total: O/U 52.5

This is the sneaky-best game of the weekend. The Jacksonville Jaguars (13-4) finished as the #3 seed in the AFC behind a dominant defense and the continued development of Trevor Lawrence. The Buffalo Bills (12-5) are led by Josh Allen, who finished with 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. This has shootout potential written all over it.

Josh Allen in January is a different beast. He’s one of the best playoff performers in the league, and the Bills’ offense is humming. James Cook led the league in rushing yards this season, giving Buffalo a balanced attack that’s tough to defend. Allen has the arm to pick apart Jacksonville’s secondary, and the Bills are built for this moment.

Trevor Lawrence has been lights-out at home all season. Jacksonville’s defense is top-5 in points allowed, and they’ve got the weapons on offense—Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Etienne. However, the emergence of Parker Washington might be the X-factor. He’s made countless splash plays for this Jags’ team down the stretch.

They also have the benefit of playing at home in the loud confines of EverBank Stadium. Both offenses are explosive, and both defenses have vulnerabilities. This game could easily turn into a track meet.

#6 San Francisco 49ers @ #3 Philadelphia Eagles

  • Kickoff: 4:30 PM ET | TV: FOX
  • Spread: Eagles -4.5 | Moneyline: Eagles -220, 49ers +188 | Total: O/U 44.5

NFC heavyweight showdown. The Philadelphia Eagles (11-6) finished as the #3 seed and are led by Jalen Hurts, who has been on a tear down the stretch. The San Francisco 49ers (12-5) are dealing with massive injury issues, most notably losing MLB Fred Warner (IR-Ankle), who is out until at least the NFC Championship Game. Backup LB Tatum Bethune is also done for the season.

Philly is healthy where it matters most—Jalen Hurts is rolling, Saquon Barkley is a monster in the backfield, and A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are one of the best WR duos in the league. At home, this Eagles offense is explosive. The Eagles’ run game with Barkley has been dominant, and without Fred Warner anchoring the middle of the defense, San Francisco is vulnerable.

However, the offense has been horrid at times this season. Much of the public is blaming OC Kevin Patullo, who literally had eggs thrown at his house this season. That being said, there has been such a lack of creativity, and the players are simply not in the right positions to succeed on the field.

Literally, can we move A.J. Brown into the slot once in a while? I mean, who is running the “analytics” department in Philly? Maybe they are saving the “bag work” for the playoffs.

Even without Fred Warner, San Francisco still has Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle. This is a team built for playoff football. The problem?

The defense. The Eagles will look to exploit that weakness by pounding the rock with Saquon Barkley and letting Jalen Hurts make plays with his legs in the red zone.

#7 Los Angeles Chargers @ #2 New England Patriots

  • Kickoff: 8:00 PM ET | TV: NBC
  • Spread: Patriots -3.5 | Moneyline: Patriots -196, Chargers +164 | Total: O/U 46.5

The New England Patriots (14-3) have been the surprise story of the AFC this season. Second-year QB Drake Maye has been sensational, and the Patriots’ defense—led by free agent acquisitions Harold Landry and Milton Williams—has been elite. The Los Angeles Chargers (11-6) are dealing with massive O-line injuries, losing both starting tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt.

Drake Maye has been a revelation in his second season. The Patriots’ defense is top-3 in the league, and they’re playing at home in Foxborough in January. This is a team built for playoff football. The addition of Harold Landry and Milton Williams in free agency has transformed their pass rush, and they’re going to be coming after Justin Herbert all night.

New England has been phenomenal this year, but they also battled the easiest strength of schedule in football. It makes you wonder about this matchup.

Justin Herbert is one of the best QBs in the league, even with a broken hand. The problem? His offensive line is in shambles. Without Slater and Alt protecting the edges, Herbert is going to be under constant pressure. The Chargers’ season might come down to whether backup tackles can hold up against New England’s ferocious pass rush. This is a nightmare matchup for Los Angeles.

#5 Houston Texans @ #4 Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Kickoff: 8:15 PM ET | TV: ESPN/ABC
  • Spread: Texans -3.5 | Moneyline: Texans -190, Steelers +160 | Total: O/U 39.5

The primetime finale. The Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7) squeaked into the playoffs behind the ageless Aaron Rodgers, who signed with Pittsburgh in the offseason and threw for 3,028 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. The Houston Texans (12-5) are led by CJ Stroud, who finished with 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.

The Texans’ defense is elite, and they have weapons on offense—Nico Collins, Tank Dell, and CJ Stroud. The problem? Losing Laremy Tunsil to an oblique injury is huge. Stroud is going to be under pressure all night from T.J. Watt, who is one of the most disruptive pass rushers in NFL history.

Aaron Rodgers has been here before. This is his sixth different playoff appearance, and he’s got his main weapons back for the playoffs, DK Metcalf (returning from suspension). The backfield duo of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell has been fantastic for Arthur Smith’s offense. Gainwell is a check-down machine.

Pittsburgh’s defense, led by T.J. Watt, is built for playoff football. This is a classic “veteran QB with weapons vs. young QB under pressure” matchup. The Steelers will look to make Stroud uncomfortable in the pocket, while the Texans will try to get the ball out quickly and rely on their playmakers in space.

The Steelers are fresh off that unbelievable Week 18 win that clinched them the AFC North and a playoff berth. Will they ride momentum or be sluggish coming off such a high? They’ll be playing at home despite Houston putting together a better season.
