Here’s what’s happening with this Hawks team. They’re messy, they can’t rebound (30th in the league), and they’ve dropped two straight. But they’re getting healthier at exactly the right time.
Jalen Johnson returned Monday against Chicago and dropped 25 points after missing time with an ankle issue. Zaccharie Risacher is working his way back.
Kristaps Porzingis shook off the flu to put up 27 in that same game. When you add Trae Young’s 21 points and 17 assists from that Chicago loss, you’re looking at an offensive unit that should absolutely torch Brooklyn’s nonexistent defense.
The Nets rank dead last—30th—in defensive rating. They’ve given up 131 to Cleveland, 118 to San Antonio, and 137 to Houston in their last three.
Coach Jordi Fernandez called the effort “unacceptable” after that Houston beatdown, but words don’t fix structural problems. This roster is thin, they’re down three rotation players to injury, and they simply don’t have the bodies to hang with Young’s pick-and-roll mastery.

Cam Thomas is averaging 29.3 points per game, including a 40-piece against San Antonio on Saturday. Michael Porter Jr. has been solid at 23.0 PPG. The rebounding battle is a push (both teams rank 30th), so second-chance points won’t separate them. If Thomas and Porter Jr. get nuclear and the Barclays crowd brings energy, maybe Brooklyn keeps this within single digits.
