CFB Player Props – Week 5 Thursday/Friday Picks

Below, Props.com analyst Kyle Krogstad breaks down his top college football player prop picks for Week 5.

Dante Wright More Than 50.5 Receiving Yards

Our first play of Week 5 is in the standalone Thursday night game as Temple hosts Army. Army, with their triple option offense, comes into this game 3-0. Temple, on the other hand, is 1-3 entering Thursday night’s showdown.

Dante Wright is the clear-cut number one receiver in this offense. Through four games this season, he’s had 5, 15, 10, and 4 targets. Turning in 99 or more yards in 3 of those 4 games, with the only miss coming in a Week 1 blowout loss to Oklahoma. Army ranks 75th in the country through the first couple games in passing yards allowed, at 225 per game. Temple is 51st in the country in pass play percentage at just over 50% of the time.

Army will look to chew clock each and every possession, however, I’m not sure if Temple is going to be able to limit the chunk plays. They played Navy two weeks ago, and gave up 300 yards rushing, allowing 5.8 yards per carry. Now, maybe that will do them better here. But as 13-point underdogs, I don’t think Vegas, or anyone, has much faith in them to be getting stops here. Army is FIRST in the country at time of possession, as they are on offense 64.78% of the time.

All in all, I expect Army to have success running their triple-option offense all night. That being said, obviously there will be plenty of opportunities for Wright to get looks. They should be down, they should be throwing, and he should be getting targets. He has a 23+ yard reception each game this season and that pretty much gets us halfway home already.

Kyron Drones More Than 152.5 Passing Yards

My second play is for the Friday night game, as Virginia Tech heads to Miami. Virginia Tech, maybe the biggest letdown of CFB so far, heads into this one 2-2. Miami, the complete opposite, is ranked 7th and is 4-0. Miami is a 20-point favorite.

Virginia Tech ranks 102nd in the country in pass play percentage at just over 42% of the time. Now, they’ll want to get this run game going, but I can almost guarantee Miami will put up points, and a lot of them. For VA Tech to hang in this game, they’re going to need to throw the ball. Miami has been mediocre against the pass as they got diced up last week by South Florida for over 300 passing yards.

Drones has not looked good this year as a passer, but he has surpassed this number in 2 of 4 games this season, and 8 out of 11 games as a starter last year. Over the summer, this was supposed to be a huge Week 5 matchup, as both teams had high aspirations for this season. I think Virginia Tech should come in with a bit of a chip on their shoulder as a win here, or even a close game, can definitely turn their season around.

Again, the script should be here for us. Virginia Tech should be playing from behind for a lot of this game and if they’re not, I’d like to think it’s because they are in a shootout. I think Drones either gets here within the normal game flow or by simply just playing from behind all night.
