Retail Betting - Is There A Sportsbook Near Me?

Retail betting is sports betting that takes place in brick-and-mortar establishments. It involves visiting a land-based sportsbook and placing your bets in person. It’s certainly different from mobile sports betting, where you make wagers through an app or website.

Before 2018, Nevada was the only state that offered retail sportsbooks. After the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, other states gained the right to legalize sports betting.

Any state that approves sports betting has options for how they go about it. Here are some examples:

  • New York and many other states legalize retail and online wagering.
  • Tennessee only offers online sports betting with no retail sportsbook component.
  • New Mexico only provides retail betting (through tribal casinos) with no mobile options available.

As you can see, the majority of states with legal sports wagering feature retail locations and mobile apps. Which form of betting should you choose in these situations? Online, retail, or both?

This page discusses the pros and cons of retail sports betting, as compared to mobile sportsbooks. It also dives into which states let you make bets at retail locations. Additionally, this guide covers and compares online sports gambling in relevant states with retail sportsbooks.

Where Is Retail Sports Betting Legal?

Legal retail wagering has spread across the US over the past several years. You can now find retail sportsbook options in the majority of states. Of course, many of these same jurisdictions also offer legal mobile betting. Here’s a complete look at the states that provide retail sportsbooks, online sports betting apps, or both.

List Of States With Legal Sportsbooks

All of the states listed below offer legal retail sports betting, legal online sports betting, or both. You can click on the name of a state to jump to that section of this article.

Retail Vs. Online Sports Betting – Pros And Cons

Both online and retail sportsbooks have advantages and drawbacks. From our take, mobile sports betting has more advantages over its retail counterpart. But you may still find reason to place in-person bets after reviewing pros and cons for retail and online wagering.

Retail Betting Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Social experience that can be shared with friends.
  • Some venues offer a great experience, with comfortable seating, drinks, and big screen TVs.
  • Discuss betting options face to face with employees (aka, personal experience).

Cons

  • Requires physically traveling to make bets.
  • Harder to compare odds and markets between land-based sportsbooks.
  • Few if any bonuses and promotions available.

Online Betting Pros & Cons

Pros

  • The most convenient way to make sports bets (no travel).
  • Quickly move between betting sites and compare markets and odds.
  • Plenty of sports betting bonuses and promos available

Cons

  • Limited-to-no social experience.
  • Must rely on virtual or phone support (no face-to-face interactions).

Arizona Sports Betting

The Grand Canyon State legalized retail and mobile sports betting in April 2021. After doing so, it became one of the first states to offer sports betting inside of stadiums.

As per the sports betting bill HB 2772, Arizona can award 20 total sports gambling licenses. 10 of these licenses have gone to pro sports franchises, while the remaining lot belong to Native American casinos. Each license allows an operator to offer two online betting skins and one retail sportsbook.

Arizona offers a laid-back sports betting industry with few limitations. Regarding the latter, sports bettors can’t wager on politics or make prop bets on college players.

Arizona Sportsbook Locations

This state has a unique situation in that its retail locations are split among stadiums and tribal casino locations. No commercial casinos are involved like with many other states. Here’s a list of where you can place in-person bets in Arizona:

  • Arizona Downs (Prescott Valley) – Caesars betting kiosks
  • Casino del Sol (Tucson) – SolSports
  • Chase Field (Phoenix/Arizona Diamondbacks) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Desert Diamond Casino (3 locations: Sahuarita, Tucson & Glendale) – Desert Diamond Sportsbook
  • Footprint Center (Phoenix/Suns & Mercury) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Gila River Hotel & Casino Lone Butte (Chandler) – BetMGM Sportsbook
  • Gila River Hotel & Casino Vee Quiva (Laveen Village) – BetMGM
  • Gila River Hotel & Casino Wild Horse Pass (Chandler) – BetMGM
  • Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino (Maricopa) – Caesars
  • Mazatzal Hotel & Casino (Payson) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Paradise Casino (Yuma) – Unibet Sportsbook
  • We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort (Scottsdale) – Betfred/WKP Sportsbook
  • State Farm Stadium (Glendale) – BetMGM
  • TPC Stadium Course (Scottsdale) – DraftKings Sportsbook (likely launching in 2024)

Arizona Online Sports Betting

Arizona sports bettors can place online wagers from anywhere within the state. Furthermore, there’s no in-person registration requirement on apps like with some states. Also note that the Copper State has a legal and regulated daily fantasy sports market.

Arkansas Sports Betting

The Natural State was one of the earliest states to legalizes sports betting, approving retail sportsbooks in November 2018. Strangely enough, though, Arkansas didn’t officially allow online betting until February 2022.

The Arkansas Racing Commission can issue up to eight online sports betting licenses. However, only two of these licenses have been given out so far. This state hasn’t attracted many interested operators due to an unfavorable tax rate. Casinos receive 51% of revenue generated from mobile sports betting, while online operators only get 49%.

Arkansas has a liberal sport gambling market with few restrictions. Most pro and college sports markets are fair game at retail locations and betting apps. The only notable exclusions include virtual sports and political races.

Arkansas Sportsbook Locations

Only three retail sportsbook locations are available in Arkansas. The Cherokee Nation had plans to build a casino and sportsbook in Pope County, but this development is facing legal battles. That said, the three venues below are currently the only ones accepting in-person bets:

  • Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort (Hot Springs)
  • Saracen Casino Resort (Pine Bluff)
  • Southland Casino Racing (West Memphis)

Arkansas Online Sports Betting

Again, the Natural State only offers a couple of betting apps due to the unattractive 51% tax rate. Nevertheless, AK bettors do at least have some mobile wagering options. Arkansas also has one of the oldest regulated daily fantasy sports markets, legalizing DFS in 2017.

Colorado Sports Betting

Colorado boasts one of the nation’s largest selections of casinos, with a combined 33 commercial casino operators. These gaming venues are spread between Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek. Not all of these casinos have a sportsbook, but the majority do.

The number of Colorado sports betting apps is plentiful as well, with over two dozen available. The Centennial State has low barriers to entry, including partnering with a land-based casino and paying a $125,000 two-year licensing fee. The partnership requirement hasn’t been difficult for operators considering how many CO sportsbooks/casinos are available.

The only major Colorado betting restrictions include no wagering on awards shows (eg, Oscars) or esports. As with all other states, you can’t bet on high school sports here either.

Colorado Sportsbook Locations

The Centennial State boasts plenty of retail sportsbok locations. You’ll find the most bookmakers in Black Hawk, although Central City and Cripple Creek have their fair share too.

  • Ameristar Casino Resort Spa (Black Hawk) – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Bronco Billy’s Casino (Cripple Creek) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Colorado Grande Casino (Cripple Creek) – Grande Casino Sportsbook
  • Grand Z Casino Hotel (Central City) – Maverick Sports
  • Isle Casino (Black Hawk) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Johnny Z’s Casino (Central City) – Maverick Sports (betting kiosks)
  • J.P. McGill’s (Cripple Creek) – BetRivers
  • Lady Luck Casino (Black Hawk) – Caesars
  • Mardi Gras Casino (Black Hawk) – DraftKings Sportsbook
  • Monarch Casino Resort Spa (Black Hawk) – BetMonarch (kiosks)
  • Red Dolly Casino (Black Hawk) – ELITE Sportsbook
  • Saratoga Casino (Black Hawk) – Betfred Sports
  • Sasquatch Casino (Black Hawk) – Sasquatch Sportsbook
  • The Lodge Casino (Black Hawk) – Superbook
  • Wildcard Saloon (Black Hawk) – Wildcard Sportsbook
  • Ute Mountain Casino (Towaoc) – Ute Sportsbook
  • Wildwood Casino (Cripple Creek) – BetWildwood
  • Z Casino (Black Hawk) – Maverick (kiosks)

Colorado Online Sports Betting

Colorado has become a hot spot for online sportsbook operators. If features more than two dozen sports betting apps—quite impressive for a state with under 6 million people. In addition to online sportsbooks, the Centennial State also offers legal DFS sites.

Connecticut Sports Betting

The Mohegan Tribe (Mohegan Sun) and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (Foxwoods) have long dominated the Connecticut gambling scene with their mega casinos. Not surprisingly, these two tribes were heavily involved in the efforts to legalize sports betting in the Nutmeg State.

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort have partnered with FanDuel and DraftKings, respectively, for land-based and mobile sports betting. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Lottery aligned with PlaySugarHouse (aka, Rush Street/BetRivers). But Play SugarHouse is exiting the state, leaving the lottery to find a new land-based and online betting partner.

You can expect a standard sports wagering experience in this state with few restrictions. But one notable caveat is that you can’t normally bet on in-state college teams. The lone exception is if a Connecticut school is competing in a tournament (eg, NCAA Tournament).

Connecticut Sportsbook Locations

The CT sports betting industry heavily revolves around the state lottery and two tribal casinos. But Sportech serves as an extra participant in the retail market. Here’s a look at where you can make in-person sports bets in Connecticut:

  • Foxwoods Resort Casino (Ledyard) – DraftKings Sportsbook
  • Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort (Uncasville) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Connecticut Lottery – Betting available at participating lottery retailers.
  • Sportech/Winners – 15 off-track betting locations

Connecticut Online Sports Betting

Connecticut’s sports betting bill, HB 6451, allows for three mobile wagering licenses. The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes own two of the online licenses, while the Connecticut Lottery has the other. You can download a mobile betting app and wager through any of these operators within state lines.

Delaware Sports Betting

The First State lived up to its nickname by being the first to legalize sports betting after PASPA fell in May 2018. However, Delaware only approved retail wagering and did not legalize mobile wagering.

This same situation stands today, meaning you can only place in-person bets within Delaware. State betting revenue has suffered due to the retail-only market combined with Delaware’s small population (1m).

Legislators may seriously discuss legalizing online sports betting in the future. But for now, DE bettors are limited to the retail sector.

Delaware Sportsbook Locations

Three retail sportsbooks are available in the Blue Hen State. The Delaware Lottery oversees these bookmakers, while William Hill serves as the risk manager. You can see the available legal sports betting options below:

  • Bally’s Dover Casino Resort (Dover)
  • Delaware Park Casino & Racing (Wilmington)
  • Harrington Raceway and Casino (Harrington)

Delaware Online Sports Betting

As explained before, Delaware doesn’t offer online sports betting at this time. The state would need to amend the current betting laws to allow for online sites. Luckily, though, you can at least enjoy legal daily fantasy sports sites in Delaware.

Illinois Sports Betting

Illinois launched one of the more-restrictive betting markets in 2020. It initially required in-person registration for betting apps, along a ban on mobile bets involving in-state-colleges. But as of March 2022, the in-person registration requirement has been lifted.

You can enjoy several land-based and mobile sports betting options in this state. The retail locations cover a large portion of Illinois, from Joliet to East St. Louis. You’ll be within driving distance of legal sportsbooks from pretty much anywhere inside the state.

Of course, you can always skip the drive and download mobile betting apps. Again, state politicians got rid of the inconvenient in-person registration stipulation. Now you can quickly get started without having to visit a retail sportsbook.

Illinois Sportsbook Locations

Mobile apps normally enjoy key advantages over their brick-and-mortar counterparts. However, Illinois retail sportsbooks are the only places where you can make in-state college sports bets. If you like local college teams, then land-based venues are your only options for wagering on these schools. Here are the IL retail locations:

  • Argosy Casino Alton
  • Casino Queen (East St. Louis) – DraftKings Sportsbook
  • Grand Victoria Casino (Elgin) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino (Aurora & Joliet)
  • Par-a-Dice Casino (East Peoria) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Rivers Casino (Des Plaines) – BetRivers Sportsbook

Illinois Online Sports Betting

The good news is that you can now register at Illinois online sports betting apps without visiting brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. The bad news is that you still can’t place wagers on in-state college teams through mobile devices. Outside of this restriction, IL betting apps offer many markets and bet types.

Indiana Sports Betting

The Hoosier State legalized sports wagering in 2019 and has quickly seen its market grow. Indiana features one of the country’s lowest licensing fees at $50,000 per year. This reasonable annual licensing fee plus a 9.5% tax rate have attracted plenty of operators. Over a dozen retail and sports betting apps are available in the state.

The IN betting legislation HB 1015 allows for up to 40 mobile sports betting apps. Given that no state currently offers this many betting apps, it’s little surprise that Indiana hasn’t reached its limit yet.

You can bet on nearly anything in the Hoosier State, save for esports, high school contests, and politics. The esports ban is due to concerns over certain pro gamers being under 18 years old.

Indiana Sportsbook Locations

Retail Indiana sportsbooks are divided up between casinos, horse racing tracks, and off-track betting venues. The heaviest concentration of retail locations is around East Chicago and Indianapolis. But as seen below, you can find brick-and-mortar sportsbooks elsewhere too:

  • Ameristar Casino East Chicago – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Belterra Casino Resort (Florence) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Blue Chip Casino (Michigan City) – FanDuel
  • Caesars Southern Indiana (Elizabeth) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • French Lick Resort Casino (French Lick)
  • Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana (Gary) – Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Harrah’s Hoosier Park (Anderson) – The Book (Caesars)
  • Hollyood Lawrenceburg – Barstool
  • Horseshoe Casino Hammond – Caesars
  • Indiana Grand Casino (Shelbyville)
  • Rising Star Casino (Rising Sun)
  • Bally’s Evansville Casino & Hotel – Bally Bet
  • Winner’s Circle OTB (3 locations: Clarksville, Indianapolis & New Haven)

Indiana Online Sports Betting

With over a dozen mobile sports betting apps, Indiana has a great selection for online bettors. You can download these apps, register, and deposit remotely—making the mobile wagering process as smooth as possible. Just remember that you can’t place esports bets online or in person here. On another note, daily fantasy sports have been legal and regulated in Indiana since 2016.

Iowa Sports Betting

Similar to Illinois, Iowa started with an in-person registration requirement for mobile betting. This requirement expired in 2021, though, thus providing a boost to IA online sportsbooks.

The Hawkeye State is among the friendliest towards bookmakers due to its low fees. Sportsbook operators can get a license for $45,000, followed by a $10,000 annual renewal fee. These low fees have helped Iowa attract 18 betting apps, which is impressive for its low population (3.2m).

This state allows almost all types of betting markets. The only notable markets that you can’t wager on include awards shows and political races.

Iowa Sportsbook Locations

You can currently place sports wagers at 17 casinos throughout Iowa. These sportsbooks are well spread out across the state, with no more than 100 miles in between each one. Here are the retail IA sportsbooks at the time of writing:

  • Ameristar Council Bluffs
  • Blackbird Bend Casino (Onawa)
  • Catfish Bend Casino – PointBets Sportsbook
  • Diamond Jo Casino (2 locations: Dubuque & Northwood) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Grand Falls Casino (Grand Falls) – Betfred Sportsbook
  • Hard Rock Sioux City – Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Harrah’s Council Bluffs – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Horseshoe Council Bluffs – The Book (Caesars)
  • Isle Casino (Bettendorf & Waterloo) – Caesars
  • Lakeside Casino (Osceola) – DRF Retail Sportsbook
  • Prairie Meadows (Altoona) – Caesars
  • Q Casino (Dubuque) – Q Sportsbook
  • Rhythm City Casino (Davenport) – ELITE Sportsbook
  • Riverside Casino (Riverside) – ELITE
  • Wild Rose Casino & Resort (3 locations: Clinton, Emmetburg & Jefferson) – DK Sportsbook (DraftKings)

Iowa Online Sports Betting

As covered earlier, you no longer have to register in person to place online wagers in Iowa. This requirement ended in 2021, thus allowing you to sign up online, deposit, and start betting. Everything is fair game regarding mobile betting markets, save for politics and awards shows.

Kansas Sports Betting

The Wheat State tried being a front runner with sports wagering, beginning legislative discussions on the matter in 2018. However, lawmakers weren’t able to agree on a bill (SB 84) until May 2022. Online and retail bookmakers launched on Sept. 1, just in time for the NFL season.

The Kansas betting industry centers on the state’s casinos. Each casino can have up to 50 retail partnerships (eg, sports arenas, bars) and as many as three online skins. Casinos can add a fourth online skin by partnering with a pro sports team (eg, Topeka Tropics).

As for the market rules, you can bet on pro and college sports in this state. Notable prohibited markets include esports, awards shows, and politics.

Kansas Sportsbook Locations

Both Kansas commercial and tribal casinos can offer retail wagering. This differs from the online market, where only commercial casinos can participate. Here are the KS venues that accept retail bets:

  • Boot Hill Casino (Dodge City) – DraftKings Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway (Kansas City) – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel (Pittsburg) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Kansas Star Casino (Mulvane) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Prairie Band Casino & Resort (Mayetta) – Coming soon

Kansas Online Sports Betting

Each commercial casino can run three online skins, whether their own or partnerships with mobile betting brands. That makes for 12 betting apps altogether, although not all of these skins are in use. Nevertheless, you’ll have plenty of options for placing mobile bets within state lines. Additionally, daily fantasy sports have been legal in Kansas since 2015.

Louisiana Sports Betting

Louisiana is one of the few southern states that have legalized sports wagering. Voters approved the matter in 55 out of 64 parishes through a Nov. 2020 referendum. Interestingly enough, these 55 parishes are the only ones that can legally accept wagers. Gov. John Bel Edwards made sports betting official by signing three different bills in June 2021.

The combined legislation allows for 20 retail locations, including four racetracks, one land-based casino, and 14 riverboats (a 15th has closed). Each land-based license holder can run up to two online skins. These operators pay 15% and 10% tax rates on mobile and retail wagering revenue, respectively.

The Louisiana betting market doesn’t have many restrictions, meaning almost everything is fair game. Politics and awards shows are the two main restrictions in this state.

Louisiana Sportsbook Locations

Again, riverboats, horse tracks, and a land-based casino (Harrah’s New Orleans) can accept retail wagers. The Louisiana Lottery adds one more component because it’s allowed to offer betting kiosks at bars and restaurants. As for the casino and racetrack wagering locations, here’s the current list:

  • Amelia Belle Casino (Amelia) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Boomtown Casino (2 locations: Bossier City & New Orleans) – The Sportsbook
  • Coushatta Casino Resort (Kinder) – Rez Sportsbook
  • Delta Downs (Vinton) – FanDuel
  • Evangeline Downs (Opelousas) – FanDuel
  • Harrah’s Louisiana Downs (Bossier City) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Harrah’s New Orleans – Caesars
  • Hollywood Casino Queen Baton Rouge – DraftKings Sportsbook
  • Golden Nugget (Lake Charles) – DraftKings
  • Horseshoe Bossier City Casino & Hotel – Caesars
  • L’Auberge Casino ( 2 locations: Baton Rouge & Lake Charles) – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Margaritaville Resort Casino (Bossier City) – The Sportsbook
  • Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino (Shreveport) – FanDuel
  • Treasure Chest Casino (Kenner) – FanDuel

Louisiana Online Sports Betting

You can place legal mobile wagers in any of the 55 parishes that voted for sports gambling. Meanwhile, the nine parishes where you can’t place retail or online bets are:

  • Caldwell
  • Catahoula
  • Franklin
  • Jackson
  • La Salle
  • Sabine
  • Union
  • West Carroll
  • Winn

Most of these parishes are in the northeastern part of Louisiana. Therefore, you’ll want to avoid this area if you are interested in placing bets. DFS is also legal in Louisiana, although only 47 parishes voted for it.

Maryland Sports Betting

Maryland voters approved retail and mobile sports betting in Nov. 2020, followed by politicians officially legalizing the matter in July 2020. The legislation HB 940 allows for 60 online betting and 47 retail licenses. Three additional retail licenses are available in case any new pro sports teams move to the Old Line State.

As seen below, HB 940 distributes licenses in a unique manner. The higher classifications get first preference on location when opening sportsbooks:

  • Class A-1 – A casino with 1,000+ slot machines, a racetrack, or a sports stadium (eg, MGM National Harbor, FedEx Field).
  • Class A-2 – A casino with less than 1,000 slot machines (eg, Rocky Gap Casino Resort).
  • Class B-1 – Companies with 25+ employees and over $3 million in annual revenue (eg, Bingo World).
  • Class B-2 – Smaller businesses that don’t fit into the first three categories but still want to apply for a license.

This state doesn’t have many restrictions regarding what you can bet on. The only exceptions include no wagering on high school sports, entertainment events (eg, Oscars), and political races.

Maryland Sportsbook Locations

The 47 retail licenses have enabled many small businesses like bars to participate in MD sports betting. We won’t go into all of these small locations, but the prominent venues are listed below:

  • Bingo World (Baltimore) – BetRivers Sportsbook
  • Greenmont Station OTB (Hampstead) – BetParx Sportsbook
  • Horseshoe Casino Baltimore – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino Perryville – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Live! Casino & Hotel Hanover – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • MGM National Harbor (Forest Heights) – BetMGM Sportsbook
  • Ocean Downs Casino (Worcester County) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Riverboat on the Potomac (Colonial Beach, VA) – PointsBet Sportsbook

Maryland Online Sports Betting

While the allotment for 60 betting apps is overly ambitious, Maryland does offer plenty of mobile betting options. You can download and register with any of these apps remotely. As covered earlier, online bets are available on most markets outside of awards/entertainment events. Although DFS isn’t regulated in Maryland, it’s still legal thanks to a legal clarification in 2012.

Massachusetts Sports Betting

Home to the Boston Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and New England Patriots, Massachusetts is a natural fit for sports wagering. State legislators approved the Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act (H5164) in Aug. 2022, followed by Gov. Charlie Baker’s signature within the same month.

All active casinos and racetracks qualify for MA retail and mobile sports betting licenses. Casinos can have two online partners, while racetracks can possess one. H5164 allows for up to 15 mobile betting licenses overall, including eight tied to casinos and racetracks. The remaining seven licenses are available to chosen applicants.

Massachusetts doesn’t permit betting on in-state college teams. The only exception is when local teams are playing in a tournament with 4+ or more schools involved. Esports and politics are also off the table when placing wagers here.

Massachusetts Sportsbook Locations

The Bay State currently only has three retail betting locations, which are all at casino resorts. Those in the Boston metropolitan area will find the Everett Casino to be the most-convenient retail location. You can see the three betting venues below:

  • Encore Boston Harbor (Everett) – WynnBET Sportsbook
  • MGM Springfield – BetMGM Sportsbook
  • Plainridge Park Casino (Plainville) – Barstool Sportsbook

Massachusetts Online Sports Betting

You can download any licensed MA betting app and get started with little time wasted. Just remember that wagering on in-state colleges is prohibited outside of tournament circumstances. Additionally, daily fantasy has been legal in Massachusetts since 2016.

Michigan Sports Betting

The Wolverine State took a proactive approach to sports gambling, with a committee passing pre-legislation in 2017. Despite this, Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a betting bill in 2018 that would’ve made Michigan one of the earliest states with sports wagering. But the state finally got a deal done after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Sports Betting Act in Dec. 2019.

Michigan has 23 tribal casinos and three commercial casinos, with the latter all being in Detroit. Every casino pays an 8.4% tax on sports betting revenue, while the Detroit establishments pay an extra 1.5%. Betting licenses cost $100,000 plus a $50,000 application fee, followed by an annual $50,000 operating/renewal fee.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board allows most types of markets, including esports and in-state college team betting. It typically prohibits wagering on awards events, although it has previously made an exception for the Oscars.

Michigan Sportsbook Locations

Detroit offers large, posh sportsbooks that are similar to the Vegas experience. But you can find plenty of quality brick-and-mortar venues in tribal casinos sprinkled throughout the state. Here’s a complete list of where to place in-person wagers in Michigan:

  • Bay Mills (Brimley) – DraftKings
  • Firekeepers Casino (Battle Creek) – Dacey’s Sportsbook
  • Four Winds Casinos (Dowagiac, Hartford & New Buffalo) – Four Winds kiosks
  • Greektown Casino (Detroit) – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Gun Lake Casino (Wayland) – 131 Sportsbook & Lounge
  • Island Resort & Casino (Harris) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Leelanau Sands Casino (Peshawbestown) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Little Caesars Arena (Detroit) – PointsBet Sportsbook
  • Little River Casino (Manistee) – River Rock Sportsbook & Grill
  • Kewadin Casinos (5 locations: Christmas, Hessel, Manistique, Sault St. Marie & St. Ignace) – WynnBET kiosks
  • MGM Grand (Detroit) – BetMGM Sports Lounge
  • MotorCity Casino (Detroit) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Northern Waters Casino Resort (Watersmeet) – PointsBet
  • Odawa Casino (2 locations: Mackinaw City & Petoskey) – FOX Bet kiosks
  • Soaring Eagle Casino (Mt Pleasant) – Ascend Sportsbook
  • Turtle Creek Casino (Williamsburg) – Caesars

Michigan Online Sports Betting

The Grand Lake State offers 15 betting apps—the maximum amount allowed under Michigan law. Each casino with a mobile license can either have an online partner or launch their own brand. A few tribal gaming venues have chosen the latter route (eg, Firekeepers). The 2019 legislation signed by Whitmer also allows for legal DFS sites.

Mississippi Sports Betting

Mississippi is the Las Vegas of the South with 28 brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. This large number of sportsbooks is welcome because the Magnolia State has weird rules regarding online wagering.

Mississippi doesn’t allow you to place mobile bets from just anywhere within state lines. Instead, you have to be on a participating casino/sportsbook property. Lawmakers wanted to ensure that mobile apps wouldn’t negatively affect the state’s lucrative brick-and-mortar gambling industry.

Beyond the in-person app betting requirement, Mississippi restricts wagering on esports and awards shows. On the other hand, it doesn’t place limits on how much you can bet on a given game. The only limits are those set by the bookmakers themselves.

Mississippi Sportsbook Locations

Whether you’re into retail or mobile betting, you’ll need to rely on brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in this state. Luckily, Mississippi has one of the largest selections of land-based betting locations in the US. You can see what’s available below:

  • 1st Jackpot Casino (Tunica Resorts) – The Sportsbook
  • Ameristar Casino Hotel Vicksburg – End Zone Sportsbook
  • Bally’s Vicksburg – VB Sportsbook
  • Beau Rivage (Biloxi) – BetMGM Sportsbook (mobile app available)
  • Bok Homa Casino (Sandersville)
  • Boomtown Casino Biloxi – The Sportsbook
  • Fitz Casino Hotel Tunica – The Sportsbook
  • Gold Strike Casino Resort (Tunica Resorts) – BetMGM (mobile app available)
  • Golden Moon Casino (Philadelphia)
  • Golden Nugget Biloxi Hotel & Casino
  • Harrah’s Gulf Coast (Biloxi) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Biloxi – Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Harlow’s Casino Resort & Spa (Greenville) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino Gulf Coast (Bay St. Louis) – The Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino Tunica – The Sportsbook
  • Horseshoe Casino & Hotel (Tunica Resorts) – Caesars
  • IP Casino Resort Spa (Biloxi) – FanDuel
  • Island View Casino Resort (Gulfport) – Sports Book
  • Isle of Capri Casino Entertainment Resort (Lula) – Caesars
  • Magnolia Bluffs Casino (Natchez)
  • Palace Casino Resort (Biloxi) – Sports & Race Book
  • Riverwalk Casino and Hotel (Vicksburg) – TwinSpires
  • Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall (Tunica Resorts) – FanDuel
  • Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort (D’Iberville) – DraftKings
  • Silver Slipper Casino (Lakeshore) – Sports Book
  • Silver Star Casino (Philadelphia) – Only mobile betting
  • Tropicana Casino Greenville (Greenville) – Caesars
  • Treasure Bay Casino (Biloxi) – Sports Book
  • WaterView Casino & Hotel (Vicksburg)

Mississippi Online Sports Betting

Again, Mississippi is an oddball when it comes to mobile sports betting. It requires you to visit a brick-and-mortar casino/sportsbook when placing online bets. This stipulation has limited online sportsbook operators’ interest in the Magnolia State. If you don’t like this situation, you can at least enjoy legal DFS sites throughout Mississippi.

Montana Sports Betting

Like Mississippi, Montana is among the few states that require mobile bettors to be located on a retail sportsbook’s property. But the upside is that the Treasure State literally has hundreds of locations that accept retail sports bets.

Intralot, which runs Montana’s lottery games, has a monopoly over the state’s sports betting industry. It offers betting through several types of businesses, including bars, golf courses, and restaurants.

Montana’s betting industry has other limitations besides the in-person online wagering requirement. The most notable is a limit on how much you can wager on games. Retail bets top out at $250, while online bets go up to $1,000. The difference here is strange because you must be on location for online or retail wagers.

Montana Sportsbook Locations

Again, Big Sky Country features hundreds of retail bookmakers throughout the state. Billings has the largest concentration of sportsbooks with nearly 80. Missoula and Great Falls also have plenty of betting venues with 50+ apiece.

Montana also has some sportsbook locations along its borders. Most of its neighbors (North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming) have legalized betting. Idaho is the one exception, with some eastern Idahoans crossing the border to wager.

Montana Online Sports Betting

Intralot’s Sports Bet Montana serves all retail locations across the state. It allows you to do everything remotely except for make bets. You can sign up, browse available markets, prepare bets, and even make withdrawals from anywhere in the state. But you have to be on the actual premise of a licensed sportsbook/retailer to finalize wagers.

Nevada Sports Betting

The Silver State has long been a sports betting hub thanks to Las Vegas and Reno. In fact, Nevada was the only state that could legally run full-scale sportsbooks prior to the fall of PASPA.

It’s home to over 180 sportsbooks, including some of the world’s most-glamorous betting establishments. Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, the Wynn, and the Venetian are examples of Vegas casinos with luxurious sportsbooks. You’ll find worthwhile bookmakers in Reno and other parts of the state too.

Unfortunately, the Nevada online sports betting scene isn’t quite as impressive. You must register and deposit in person at your chosen land-based partner’s app. You’re free to place bets from anywhere in the state afterwards, but the in-person aspect is always inconvenient.

Nevada Sportsbook Locations

Not all of the 180+ sportsbooks in Nevada are elaborate venues. But you will find some impressive betting establishments throughout the state—most notably in Vegas. Here’s a short list of prominent NV retail sportsbooks:

  • Caesars Palace Las Vegas – Caesars Palace Race & Sportsbook
  • Circa Resort & Casino (Vegas) – Circa Sports
  • Eldorado Reno Hotel & Casino – Caesars Race & Sportsbook
  • Green Valley Ranch Resort (Henderson) – Green Valley Ranch Sports Book
  • LINQ Hotel – The Book at the LINQ
  • Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino (Vegas) – Bet MGM Race & Sports Book
  • MGM Grand (Vegas) – MGM Grand Race & Sports Book
  • Mohegan Casino Las Vegas – Betfred at Mohegan Sun Sportsbook
  • Peppermill Resort Hotel (Reno) – Peppermill Race & Sports Book
  • The Cosmopolitan – Cosmopolitan Race & Spots Book
  • Westgate (Vegas) – SuperBook at Westgate
  • Wynn Las Vegas – Wynn Race & Sports Book
  • The Venetian (Vegas) – Race & Sports Book at The Venetian

Nevada Online Sports Betting

The in-person signup and deposit process for Nevada sports betting apps is far from ideal. But after going through this process, you can wager at that particular online sportsbook throughout Nevada. The good news is that you have some outlet for mobile sports betting in the state.

New Hampshire Sports Betting

Most states open the door to multiple sportsbooks when they add sports betting. New Hampshire took a different approach in 2019, though, when it made a near-exclusive deal with DraftKings. The latter supplies retail and online betting throughout the state in exchange for 51% and 50% of its online and retail revenue, respectively. A 50% tax rate would normally be a no-go for most bookmakers, but DraftKings’ near monopoly makes it worthwhile.

The New Hampshire Lottery and Intralot (see Montana) are the other players in this market. They collectively provide sports lottery products through a contract that lasts until 2025.

The minimum retail and mobile sports betting age in New Hampshire is 18. The Granite State is one of the few states that allow sports bettors this young. You cannot wager on any NH college teams or collegiate games taking place in the state. New Hampshire also restricts betting on awards shows, esports, and political races.

New Hampshire Sportsbook Locations

As per HB 330, New Hampshire allows up to 10 retail sportsbooks. Over a dozen towns have applied to and been accepted to host a sportsbook. DraftKings has chosen the following three locations so far:

  • Dover – Filotimo Casino & Restaurant
  • Manchester – Filotimo Casino & Restaurant
  • Seabrook – The Brook

New Hampshire Online Sports Betting

DraftKings is the only game in town regarding sports betting apps. DraftKings offered the best proposal to the New Hampshire State Lottery and earned an online monopoly. If you like this brand, you’ll be perfectly fine with the mobile wagering scene here. Younger bettors can enjoy the action too because of the 18-year-old minimum betting age.

New Jersey Sports Betting

The Garden State legalized sports betting in 2012—long before the federal ban was overturned. New Jersey then led the fight against the federal betting ban, finally experiencing victory with PASPA’s repeal in 2018. Not surprisingly, it was the first state to launch online betting in August of the same year.

New Jersey is a hot spot for mobile wagering and features nearly 20 sports betting apps. It regularly ranks among the top states for online sports betting revenue each month. This state also has nearly a dozen brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, with most being in Atlantic City.

You can’t bet on New Jersey college teams or any collegiate game taking place within state lines. Wagering on politics is banned, but awards shows (eg, Academy Awards) and esports betting are fair game. Bookmakers can accept bets on esports contests where all participants are 18+ years old.

New Jersey Sportsbook Locations

NJ retail wagering locations are available at nine Atlantic City casinos and three racetracks. The following list shows where these sportsbooks are located:

  • Bally’s Hotel & Casino (AC) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Caesars Atlantic City – Caesars at Wild Wild West
  • Freehold Raceway (Freehold) – betPARX Sportsbook
  • Golden Nugget (AC) – The Sportsbook
  • Harrah’s Resort (AC) – Caesars
  • Hard Rock Casino (AC) – Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Monmouth Park (Monmouth) – Caesars at Monmouth Park
  • Ocean Resort (AC) – The Sportsbook
  • Resorts Casino (AC) – DraftKings
  • The Borgata (AC) – BetMGM Sportsbook & Bar
  • The Meadowlands (East Rutherford) – FanDuel
  • Tropicana Atlantic City – Caesars

New Jersey Online Sports Betting

New Jersey is the all-time leader in online sports betting revenue to date with $2.48 billion. That said, it has done very well since legalizing mobile betting in 2018. Sports gamblers can currently choose from almost 20 mobile apps. The only rules are that bettors be 21+ and within state lines when placing bets (ie, no interstate wagers). In addition to betting, New Jersey also offers legal DFS sites.

New York Sports Betting

The Empire State is similar to New Jersey in that it preemptively legalized sports wagering in 2013. Retail New York sportsbooks launched in the state in July 2019—about a year after PASPA falling.

However, online New York sportsbooks didn’t go live until January 2021. Since that time, NY has become one of the country’s biggest betting markets. It’s quickly catching up to New Jersey as the top state regarding betting revenue.

It restricts wagering on in-state college teams (eg, Syracuse, St. John’s). It also bars bets on political races and entertainment events. New York sportsbooks stay away from offering esports too because the state has yet to approve them.

New York Sportsbook Locations

Upstate commercial and Native American casino operations run all of the retail New York sportsbooks. Here are the spots where you can make in-person wagers:

  • Del Lago Resort and Casino (Waterloo) – DraftKings
  • Tioga Downs Casino, Racing & Entertainment (Nichols) – FanDuel
  • Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady – Rivers Sportsbook
  • Resorts World Catskills (Monticello) – Sportsbook 360
  • Seneca Allegany Casino (Salamanca) – Sports Lounge
  • Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino (Buffalo) – Kambi Sports Lounge
  • Seneca Niagara Casino (Niagara Falls) – Sports Lounge
  • Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort (Hogansburg) – Sticks Sports Book
  • Point Place Casino (Bridgeport) – The Lounge with Caesars Sports
  • Turning Stone Resort Casino (Verona) – The Lounge with Caesars Sports
  • Yellow Brick Road Casino (Chittenango) – The Lounge with Caesars Sports

New York Online Sports Betting

All 11 of the retail sportsbooks are hours away from New York City. Therefore, mobile betting has become extremely popular in this state. Nine mobile apps currently serve bettors, which gives you plenty of options to choose from. Just remember that you can’t wager on esports, politics, or in-state schools here.

Ohio Sports Betting

The Ohio betting market includes a mixture of casinos, racetracks, sports teams, and small businesses. It divides license holders into three classes based on the language in HB 29:

  • Type A – Up to 25 entities can receive a Type A license, which allows at least one online betting skin (two max). Only casinos and pro sports franchises have gotten these licenses so far.
  • Type B – Ohio can issue up to 40 Type B licenses, which pertain to retail sporsbooks. Only counties with over 50,000 residents can host a full-scale retail location, while no county can have more than five retail establishments.
  • Type C – This license type allows holders to run betting kiosks. It’s available in abundance to bars, restaurants, other liquor license holders, and Ohio Lottery retailers.

Ohio lets you wager on esports and in-state college teams. However, it doesn’t allow bets on entertainment events/shows or politics.

Ohio Sportsbook Locations

Outside of Scioto Downs and Taft’s Ale House, Ohio retail bookmakers are located in casinos or sports stadiums. Barstool, BetMGM, and Caesars have the biggest presences from a partner perspective in the Buckeye State:

  • Belterra Park (Cincinnati) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Great American Ballpark (Cincinnati) – BetMGM Sportsbook
  • Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati – Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino Columbus – Barstool Sportsbook
  • Hollywood Casino Toledo – Barstool
  • Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway – Barstool
  • Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley
  • JACK Cleveland Casino – betJACK Sportsbook
  • JACK Thistledown Racino (North Randall) – betJACK
  • MGM Northfield Park (Northfield) – BetMGM
  • Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (Cleveland) – Caesars Sportsbook
  • Scioto Downs (Columbus) – Caesars
  • Taft’s Ale House (Cincinnati) – SuperBook Sportsbook

Ohio Online Sports Betting

As seen above, Ohio hasn’t come close to maxing out the 40 retail licenses it can offer. Online betting is a different story, though, with nearly 20 mobile apps in operation and more on the way. Ohioans who used to cross into Indiana or Pennsylvania to wager online no longer need to worry about doing so. The Buckeye State also has legal and regulated daily fantasy sports.

Oregon Sports Betting

Oregon was one of four states grandfathered into PASPA, but it only offered lottery-related parlays. This situation has changed, though, with Oregon now allowing straight bets, spreads, totals, and more.

The Beaver State is similar to New Hampshire because it gives DraftKings a monopoly over mobile wagering. But unlike New Hampshire, it relegates land-based sportsbooks to state tribes. Each tribe can run a brick-and-mortar sportsbook on their lands, with four capitalizing on this option so far.

As for betting markets, Oregon doesn’t allow online college sports betting of any kind. However, tribal sportsbooks can accept college bets because they’re on sovereign land. Other restricted online markets include award shows, esports, and politics.

Oregon Sportsbook Locations

The Beaver State doesn’t have a bustling retail sportsbook market, but it does at least feature four locations. Again, only tribal interests can run a brick-and-mortar sportsbook on their reservations. Here are the four retail bookmakers:

  • Chinook Winds Casino Resort (Lincoln City) – Sports Wagering Lounger
  • Spirit Mountain Casino (Grand Ronde) – BetMGM Spirit Mountain Sportsbook
  • The Mill Casino & Hotel (North Bend) – Kiosks
  • Three Rivers Casino Resort (Florence) – Sportsbook at Three Rivers Casino

Oregon Online Sports Betting

DraftKings is the only mobile sports betting option available in the state. It replaced the Oregon Lottery’s Scorecard app, which struggled to generate significant revenue. DraftKings offers all notable betting markets except for college sports. You must visit a land-based tribal sportsbook to wager on college teams in Oregon. DFS sites serve Oregonians, although they’re not licensed and regulated in the state.

Pennsylvania Sports Betting

Pennsylvania is another state that preemptively passed sports wagering legislation (HB 271) in Oct. 2017. Its lawmakers had good timing, given that the federal ban fell the following spring. The Keystone State has since attracted over a dozen betting apps and retail locations.

It hasn’t experienced much trouble drawing bettors either. Pennsylvania ranks in the top 5 in all-time sports betting handle ($22.1 billion) and revenue ($1.78 billion). Its large population (13 million) and major metropolitan areas (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh) have fueled its success.

The Keystone State imposes several restrictions on its market. You can’t wager on award shows, esports, politics, or sports drafts (eg, NFL Draft). However, this state is liberal about college sports and lets you bet on any team—in-state and beyond.

Pennsylvania Sportsbook Locations

Pennsylvania currently has 14 retail wagering locations, with several sprinkled around Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, you won’t find any retail bookmakers in the sparsely populated central part of the state. Here’s an overview of where PS sportsbooks are available:

  • Chickie’s & Pete’s (Malvern) – Parx Race & Sportsbook
  • Harrah’s Casino (Chester) – Caesars
  • Hollywood Casino (Grantville) – The Sportsbook
  • Lehigh Valley Race & Sportsbook (Allentown) – Unibet Sportsbook
  • Mohegan Sun Pocono (Barre) – Unibet
  • Mount Airy Casino (Pocono) – Mount Airy Sports Book
  • Parx Casino – Parx Sportsbook
  • Rivers Casino Philadelphia – BetRivers Sportsbook
  • Rivers Casino Pittsburgh – BetRivers
  • South Philly Turf – South Philadelphia Race & Sportsbook
  • The Meadows Racetrack & Casino (Washington) – The Sportsbook at the Meadows
  • Presque Isle Downs & Casino (Erie) – TwinSpires Sportsbook
  • Valley Forge Casino (King of Prussia) – FanDuel Sportsbook
  • Wind Creek Casino (Bethlehem) – Wind Creek Bethlehem’s Sportsbook

Pennsylvania Online Sports Betting

The Keystone State is one of the pricier US betting markets with a $10 million license fee and 36% tax rate. Nevertheless, it has still drawn over a dozen mobile sports betting apps. Again, these online operators aren’t allowed to offer betting on politics, esports, or awards shows. Keep in mind that Pennsylvania also features legal daily fantasy sites.

Rhode Island Sports Betting

The Ocean State flies under the online sports betting radar because it has a limited market. You won’t see the likes of Caesars or FanDuel here—only the Sportsbook Rhode Island (Sportsbook RI) app. The latter is a collaboration between IGT, the Rhode Island Lottery, and William Hill.

Retail betting is only available at two Bally’s casinos. This small retail sector makes sense, given that Rhode Island only has 1.1 million residents. Little Rhody originally opened with just retail wagering through bill S2045 in 2018. But after disappointing revenue, legislators added online wagering through bill SB37 the following year.

Rhode Island is among a handful of states that have a minimum sports betting age of 18. Although lax on the betting age, this state does impose several restrictions. You can’t wager on in-state college teams or any college game happening in Rhode Island. Additionally, you cannot bet on awards shows (eg, Academy Awards), esports, and politics.

Rhode Island Sportsbook Locations

This state has two land-based sportsbooks in the Providence area. As shown below, they’re both at Rhode Island casinos:

  • Bally’s Twin River Casino – Sportsbook Bar & Grill
  • Bally’s Tiverton Casino & Hotel – Sportsbook Rhode Island

Rhode Island Online Sports Betting

The Sportsbook RI app is the only form of Rhode Island online legal sports betting. As mentioned before, the state lottery, IGT, and William Hill jointly run this app. We don’t see Rhode Island changing their market anytime soon and inviting other online sportsbooks to join the party. If you’re dissatisfied with the mobile sportsbook selection, you can also find DFS sites in this state.

South Dakota Sports Betting

The Mount Rushmore State offers legal retail and online sports wagering. However, the latter is only found on casino/sportsbook properties in Deadwood. This setup is similar to Mississippi, which also limits mobile bettors to on-property wagering.

Therefore, Retail sports betting is easily the best option in South Dakota. You can make in-person bets at several Deadwood sportsbooks and a couple of tribal casinos. This retail selection isn’t bad considering that South Dakota has the country’s fifth lowest population density.

Betting restrictions in South Dakota include college athlete prop bets, in-state college teams, and local minor league clubs. The ban on minor league teams is a unique exclusion that’s not seen in any other state.

South Dakota Sportsbook Locations

Deadwood is the place to visit for the most legal sports betting opportunities in South Dakota. You’ll also find a couple of additional sportsbooks on tribal lands. Here’s a full look at the options:

  • Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort (Deadwood)
  • Dakota Connection Casino (Sisseton)
  • Dakota Sioux Casino (Watertown) – Dakota Nation Sportsbook
  • Gold Dust Casino & Hotel (Deadwood)
  • Holiday Inn Resort Deadwood Mountain Grand (Deadwood) – Dale’s Sportsbook
  • The Lodge at Deadwood Gaming Resort (Deadwood) – BetLodge Sportsbook

South Dakota Online Sports Betting

Online sportsbooks are virtually nonexistent in the Mount Rushmore State. Land-based casinos in Deadwood and on tribal lands can run mobile apps on their properties. However, this task requires a large effort for little payoff. You can at least find daily fantasy sports sites in South Dakota. Lawmakers haven’t legalized DFS, but they haven’t prohibited it either.

Tennessee Sports Betting

Tennessee is one of only two states that legalized online wagering without the retail side (Wyoming being the other). It has attracted over a dozen mobile apps, which is a lot for its average population of 7 million.

Many states have found that online sportsbooks are much more successful than retail venues. The Volunteer State’s decision to only regulate mobile wagering makes sense on this basis. With no in-state casinos, brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are unlikely anytime soon.

You can bet on most markets in Tennessee, including collegiate sports and esports. The only notable exceptions include college athlete props, awards shows, and political races.

Tennessee Sportsbook Locations

The Volunteer State has two major metropolitan areas in Nashville and Memphis. Both cities could support one or more land-based sportsbooks. However, retail bookmakers usually go hand in hand with brick-and-mortar casinos. Tennessee doesn’t have any casinos, which makes retail wagering even less probable.

Tennessee Online Sports Betting

Tennesseans can’t place in-person wagers, but they have more than a dozen mobile apps to choose from. It recently passed legislation that will tax online bookmakers by handle (1.85%) rather than revenue—becoming the first state to do so. We don’t envision this being a popular move among sportsbooks because it will raise their taxes. On another note, Tennessee has offered legal DFS sites since 2016.

Virginia Sports Betting

Old Dominion has both online and retail wagering, although its market is heavily geared towards the online side. It features well over a dozen sports betting apps, including all the biggest names in the business.

As for retail locations, Virginia only has Bristol’s Hard Rock Sportsbook. The state is currently building casinos in Bristol, Danville, and Norfolk. One or more of these casinos could feature a brick-and-mortar sportsbook when they all open in 2024.

The Virginia betting market has plenty of restrictions, including no awards shows, politics, or league drafts (eg, NFL Draft). You’re also not able to wager on in-state college teams either like Virginia and Virginia State. However, you can bet on esports and all common sports markets in the Mother of States.

Virginia Sportsbook Locations

Virginia is an interesting case because its lone retail venue isn’t near a large metro area. Instead, the sportsbook is located in the less-populated southern portion of the state. Here’s info on it:

  • Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol – Hard Rock Sportsbook

Virginia Online Sports Betting

After legalizing sports wagering in April 2020, Virginia became the fastest to reach $1 billion in betting handle. While this record has since fallen, it highlights how Virginians were clamoring to place bets. You can now choose from over a dozen mobile apps when making bets here. You’ll also have access to legal DFS sites, with Virginia becoming the first state to legalize daily fantasy in early 2016.

Washington DC Sports Betting

The nation’s capital has one of the strangest sports betting setups in the country. First off, the DC Lottery is the only entity than can accept mobile bets throughout the entire city. This rule gives the lottery and its Gambet DC app a competitive advantage over outside operators.

Speaking of which, BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel have taken the plunge into this restricted market. They’ve all opened brick-and-mortar sportsbooks within Washington DC sports arenas. They can also operate mobile apps, although they’re confined to accepting wagers within a few blocks of their respective stadiums. You can see the Entertainment Restriction Zones here.

Washington DC only requires you to be 18 years old to legally make bets. Of course, you’ll need to stay within the district’s 68 square miles when wagering. Market restrictions include awards shows, esports, politics, and any college game taking place within city limits.

Washington DC Sportsbook Locations

While Washington DC’s mobile market may be restrictive to operators, the land-based sector is wide open to plenty of business types. Even a strip club called The Cloakroom operates a sportsbook in DC. Here’s a full list of what’s available:

  • Audi Field – FanDuel
  • Capital One Arena – Caesars
  • Grand Central Restaurant, Bar & Sportsbook – Grand Central Sportsbook
  • Nationals Park – BetMGM
  • The Cloakroom – Over Under Sportsbook Rooftop Lounge

Washington DC Online Sports Betting

While Washington DC offers four online sportsbooks, only the lottery’s Gambet DC is available everywhere in town. Like most lottery-based betting apps, Gambet doesn’t feature great odds. BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel outdo Gambet’s odds, but they can only offer mobile betting within their respective entertainment zones.

Washington Sports Betting

The Evergreen State has traditionally been among the staunchest gambling opponents. It’s the only state to deem playing unregulated online casino games or poker a felony. However, Washington is more lenient regarding sports wagering, having legalized it through HB 2638.

The catch is that betting is only legal at tribal gaming properties. You can’t even place mobile bets if you’re not at a relevant Native American casino. The online scene is almost nonexistent in Washington because tribes don’t see the payoff in on-property betting apps.

You can wager on all major sporting markets, esports, and college games in the Evergreen State. Restrictions include awards shows, political races, and in-state college teams.

Washington Sportsbook Locations

Only state tribes can host land-based sportsbooks, but brand names like Betfred and FanDuel can form partnerships with them. Almost half of the tribes have partnered with a well-recognized international brand. You can see the available sportsbooks and partnerships below:

  • Angel of the Winds Casino (Arlington) – The Book
  • Chewelah Casino (Chewelah) – Caesars
  • Emerald Queen Casino (Tacoma) – EQC Sportsbook
  • ilani Casino Resort (Ridgefield) – ilani Sportsbook
  • Kalispel Casino (Cusick) – Turf Club Sports Book
  • Little Creek Casino Sportsbook (Shelton) – Little Creek Casino Sportsbook
  • Muckleshoot Casino (Auburn) – Caesars
  • Northern Quest Resort & Casino (Airway Heights) – Turf Club Sports Book
  • Quil Ceda Creek Casino (Tulalip) – DraftKings
  • Silver Reef Casino Resort (Ferndale) – Betfred
  • Snoqualmie Casino in Snoqualmie – Sportsbook
  • Spokane Tribe Casino (Airway Heights) – Caesars
  • Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort (Suquamish) – FanDuel

Washington Online Sports Betting

Snoqualmie Casino (Snoqualmie, WA) is the only tribal gaming venue that offers a mobile sportsbook app. You must be at the casino to make wagers through your phone or tablet. No other apps have launched due to the limited profitability involved with this setup. Unfortunately, you can’t turn to DFS either because daily fantasy is illegal in Washington.

West Virginia Sports Betting

West Virginia was among the handful of states that legalized sports betting before PASPA fell. It did so in March 2018, just one month before the Supreme Court did away with the federal ban. Now, the state’s five casinos can each run a retail location and offer up to three online skins.

The Greenbrier is the most interesting casino player because it’s the country’s only private sportsbook. You must be a member or guest to wager at Greenbrier’s FanDuel Sportsbook. Of course, all other casino sportsbooks are open to the public just like with any other state.

West Virginia allows most betting markets, including college teams (including in state), esports, and the NFL Draft. Just note that NFL Draft betting closes 24 hours before the first pick. Awards shows and politics are off limits, although the latter isn’t allowed in any state.

West Virginia Retail Betting Locations

The Mountaineer State has five retail venues, which is plenty considering its relatively small population (1.8m). Here’s a look at where you can make in-person bets:

  • Mardi Gra Casino & Resort (Cross Lanes) – Betly Sportsbook
  • Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack (Wheeling) – Betly
  • The Casino Club at The Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs) – FanDuel
  • Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races (Charles Town) – The Sportsbook
  • Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort (New Cumberland) – Caesars

West Virginia Online Sports Betting

Each casino can have up to three online sportsbooks (15 total), with some maxing out their allotment. Therefore, you’ll enjoy plenty of options to pick from when wagering online. Also note that you’ll have access to premier DFS sites like DraftKings and FanDuel in West Virginia.

Wyoming Sports Betting

Wyoming is like Tennessee in that it offers legal online sports betting without the retail component. Retail locations don’t make much sense when considering Wyoming’s small population (581k) and vast size (97k square miles). Lawmakers considered these statistics when passing HB 133 and only allowing online sportsbooks.

You only need to be 18 years old to legally make mobile bets in Wyoming. This low minimum age makes sense given that no retail establishments are available. Most states have a minimum betting age of 21 to lower the chances of serving underage drinkers in land-based gambling venues.

The Cowboy State falls in line with most jurisdictions by banning wagers on awards shows and politics. It does allow for bets on in-state college teams, esports, and the NFL Draft. Just note that you won’t be able to place prop bets on college athletes.

Wyoming Sportsbook Locations

Again, no brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are available in Wyoming. Legislators don’t have any immediate plans to change this situation either given Wyoming’s low population density. The good news is that you can download betting apps from anywhere within the state and start wagering.

Wyoming Online Sports Betting

The Equality State doesn’t have a cap on how many mobile sports betting licenses it can grant. However, only a few mobile apps have launched in the state so far. More online sportsbooks could potentially open here, though, when considering the low $100,000 five-year license fee ($20k per year). On a side note, HB 133 allows for legal daily fantasy sports sites too.

Legal Sports Betting FAQ

What is retail betting?

Retail betting refers to sports wagering that takes place at land-based properties. It requires you to physically visit a sportsbook and place in-person wagers. Contrast this situation to online sportsbooks, where you make remote bets through your phone, tablet, or computer.

Is online betting better than retail betting?

Most bettors prefer online wagering because it’s more convenient than the retail version. With online sportsbooks, you just need to sign up and deposit before placing bets. Retail sports betting, in contrast, requires you to drive or fly to a location before wagering.

Is sports betting legal in all U.S. states?

No, some states haven’t legalized any form of betting yet. Of these states, most have made legislative attempts to permit sports betting. Alabama, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Carolina are among this group. Some of these jurisdictions will probably pass a betting bill at a later point.

How do I find sportsbooks near me?

The first step is to find out if sports betting is legal in your state or a surrounding state. Next, you can search online for sportsbooks in your area. If you live in New Mexico, for example, you might google “New Mexico sportsbooks” and see that the Santa Ana Star Casino sportsbook is nearby.

Is sports betting legal in California?

No, California hasn’t approved a sports betting bill, with voters rejecting Propositions 26 (retail) and 27 (online) in Nov. 2022. The Golden State stands as the country’s biggest betting goldmine with its $3.5 trillion economy. The different parties involved (card rooms, racetracks, tribes) have been at odds with each other over who should run sportsbooks.

Is sports betting legal in Texas?

No, Texas is one of the most-conservative states when it comes to gambling. Rep. Jeff Leach authored a Texas sports betting bill that passed the state House. But Dan Patrick, the Lt. Governor and Senate leader, said that the legislation had no chance to pass the Senate.

What sportsbooks are legal in New Jersey?

The Garden State offers nearly 20 legal online sportsbooks and a dozen retail locations. Nine of the retail betting venues are located in Atlantic City, with examples being Hard Rock, FanDuel (Bally’s), and Caesars (Wild Wild West). The other three retail locations are at Freehold Raceway, Monmouth Park, and The Meadowlands.
