NFL Week 9 Injury Report: Key Players

We have a bit of a lighter load in terms of injuries in Week 9, but there are still some notable names among the walking wounded at quarterback, as well a pair of confirmed absences at running back to examine.

In this article each week, we’ll highlight some noteworthy players who have opened the practice week with an injury designation of some sort and offer some quick hits on the expected impact of their absences, if those come to fruition.

NOTE: This article is posted on Fridays. Make sure to check on the updated injury statuses before locking in your NFL Week 9 plays. Good luck!

Quarterbacks

Brock Purdy, 49ers, QUESTIONABLE (toe)

Purdy once again practiced in limited fashion all week, and as per Friday reports, will serve as the No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Giants in a best-case scenario.

That tees up a fifth consecutive start for Mac Jones, who’s free of an injury deisgnation but has now put together two consecutive sub-200-yard games during which his completion rate has dipped to 62.1 percent. Jones also has a 3:4 TD:INT over his last three games, and Sunday, he’ll continue working without Ricky Pearsall (knee), who’s already ruled outl.

Kyler Murray, ARI, QUESTIONABLE (foot)

Murray logged limited practices both Thursday and Friday, and Saturday’s final official session of Week 9 prep before Monday night’s game against the Cowboys may offer more clarity on the mobile signal-caller’s chances of avoiding a third consecutive absence.

Friday reports indicated head coach Jonathan Gannon was preparing for Murray to start but also noted Jacoby Brissett, who’s completed 65.0 percent of his passes for 599 yards and a 4:1 TD:INT while adding 45 rushing yards in the last two games while starting in Murray’s stead, took the majority of first-team reps during the portion of practice open to the media.

Joe Flacco, CIN, QUESTIONABLE (shoulder)

Flacco sandwiched practice absences Wednesday and Friday around a limited Thursday session, and he is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bears. Despite not participating Friday, Flacco, who is officially dealing with a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder, did some light throwing and said he felt pretty good, while head coach Zac Taylor also said he thought Flacco looked to be on a good trajectory to play versus Chicago.

If the veteran ultimately has to sit out, Jake Browning, who completed 64.5% of his passes with a 6:8 TD:INT along with a 9-39-1 rushing line over four starts before being benched, will get the call under center.

Other notable short-term QB injuries to monitor: Andy Dalton, CAR, QUESTIONABLE (thumb)

Running Backs

D’Andre Swift, Bears, OUT (groin)

Swift has been dealing with a groin injury for multiple weeks, but Week 9 will mark the first time he’s unable to play through it.

With the veteran running back ruled out against the Bengals after missing practice all week, rookie Kyle Monangai appears set to handle a robust workload, considering No. 3 running back Roschon Johnson has also been ruled out due to a back injury. That leaves only Travis Homer, who’s a career change-of-pace back, behind Monangai, and the latter could be teed up for the best outing of his career against a Bengals team surrendering the second-most RB yards per carry (5.26).

Rhamondre Stevenson, Patriots, OUT (toe)

Stevenson missed practice all week and has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Falcons. Stevenson appears to finish the Week 8 win over the Titans without any injury, but with his surprise absence now confirmed, rookie TreVeyon Henderson, who’s yet to log more than 11 carries in any game, is set to work as the clear lead back versus an Atlanta defense surrendering 4.38 RB yards per carry.

Alvin Kamara, Saints QUESTIONABLE (ankle)

Kamara practiced in limited fashion all week, and head coach Kellen Moore said Friday that his star running back was heading in the right direction for Sunday’s game against the Rams. With Kendre Miller now on IR due to his knee injury, rookie sixth-round pick Devin Neal would be set to operate as New Orleans’ lead back if Kamara were to sit out.

Other notable short-term RB injuries to monitor: Isiah Pacheco, Chiefs, OUT (knee); Roschon Johnson, Bears, OUT (back)

Wide Receivers

Travis Hunter, Jaguars, OUT (IR, knee)

Hunter was placed on injured reserve Friday, the result of a non-contact injury he suffered in Thursday’s practice. While an MRI confirmed Hunter’s ACL was intact, the rookie third overall pick is slated for further evaluation next week.

Ironically, the Jaguars had emerged from the bye publicly proclaiming they planned to focus a lot more on getting the ball in Hunter’s hands, but with those plans now scuttled for at least the next four games, Parker Washington and Dyami Brown both project for expanded opportunity alongside No. 1 wideout Brian Thomas Jr., who also stands to see a bump in targets.

Terry McLaurin, Commanders, OUT (quadriceps)

McLaurin is right back to inactive status for Sunday night’s Week 9 matchup against the Seahawks, failing to make it through an entire game in his Week 8 return. The veteran wideout made a diving grab in the third quarter of Monday night’s loss to the Chiefs and never returned, aggravating the quad injury that had kept him out in Weeks 4-7.

Deebo Samuel and Luke McCaffrey will each bump up a notch on the depth chart against Seattle, while veteran Chris Moore figures to work as the No. 3 wideout behind them.

Calvin Ridley, Titans, OUT (hamstring)

Ridley will log a third straight absence in Sunday’s game against the Chargers after failing to practice all week. In his ongoing absence, Elic Ayomanor, Van Jefferson and Chimere Dike will continue to serve as Cam Ward’s top three receivers, a scenario that’s primarily benefited Dike thus far in the form of an 11-163-1 line on 12 targets in the last pair of contests.

Other notable short-term WR injuries to monitor: Ricky Pearsall, 49ers, OUT (knee); Joshua Palmer, Bills, OUT (knee); Dontayvion Wicks, Packers, OUT (calf); Marvin Mims, Broncos, OUT (concussion); Luther Burden, Bears, OUT (concussion); Rashid Shaheed, Saints, QUESTIONABLE (hip); Cooper Kupp, Seahawks, QUESTIONABLE (hamstring); Zay Jones, Cardinals, QUESTIONABLE (knee)

Tight Ends

Dalton Schultz, Texans, QUESTIONABLE (knee/shoulder)

Schultz had an interesting practice regimen this past week, sitting out the first two sessions before participating in full Friday. Per Friday beat writer reports, the veteran tight end is expected to be available for Sunday’s matchup against the Broncos. If Schultz were to reverse course, the only healthy tight end behind him on Houston’s roster available to step in is journeyman Harrison Bryant.

Other notable short-term TE injuries to monitor: Josh Oliver, Vikings, OUT (foot); Daniel Bellinger, Giants, DOUBTFUL (knee); Will Dissly, Chargers, QUESTIONABLE (illness)
