The San Antonio Spurs have one of the most exciting young cores in basketball, and it was on full display in their season opener against the Dallas Mavericks. What was billed as a showdown between two of the league’s most recent first overall picks quickly turned into a one-sided showcase for Victor Wembanyama.
The French phenom absolutely stole the spotlight, erupting for 40 points and 15 rebounds in a dominant performance that reverberated throughout the NBA. He’s going to be fun to target in terms of Spurs props this season.
The New Orleans Pelicans opened their season with a tough loss, squandering an 11-point halftime lead in a 128-122 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite the disappointing outcome, there were still encouraging signs to build upon.
Chief among them was the performance of Zion Williamson, who looked as healthy and explosive as he has since his college days. Noticeably leaner and more active, Williamson delivered a strong debut with 27 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and an impressive 5 steals.
If he can maintain this level of conditioning and durability, the ceiling for the sixth-year forward remains sky-high.

Wembanyama controlled every facet of opening night, gliding up the floor like a guard, protecting the rim like a seasoned center, and overwhelming defenders in the paint. His unique combination of skill, size, and coordination remains unlike anything the league has ever seen.
After one game, the “WemVP” chants are already echoing, and it’s hard to argue against the hype given how unstoppable he looked on opening night.
As electric as Wembanyama is, he’s far from the only reason for Spurs fans to be excited. Second-year guard Stephon Castle stepped up impressively in place of the injured De’Aaron Fox, posting 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in 29 minutes.
The 2024 fourth overall pick looked poised and confident, and with Fox sidelined again for the upcoming matchup against New Orleans, Castle will be relied upon to handle primary playmaking duties once more.
Devin Vassell’s offensive role has diminished slightly, but his ability to score efficiently and space the floor remains invaluable.
Alongside sharpshooter Julian Champagnie, the Spurs’ wings provide essential perimeter balance that keeps defenses honest and opens lanes for Wembanyama’s inside dominance.
Veterans Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson add stability and experience to a rotation otherwise brimming with youth. Both know their roles and provide a steadying presence amid the energy and creativity of San Antonio’s young core.
Adding to the excitement is rookie guard Dylan Harper, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft. Harper impressed in his debut, scoring 15 points in 23 minutes while flashing the quickness and shot-making that made him a coveted prospect. With Fox still out, Harper should see another healthy dose of minutes as he continues his early development.
The Spurs are clearly a team on the rise and loaded with young talent. Their demolition of Dallas in the opener only amplified the optimism surrounding this group. Now, as they prepare to face the Pelicans, the question is whether they can sustain that same level of dominance.
Another commanding performance would further cement the idea that this Spurs team is not just the future of the league, but already a serious problem in the present.
Pelicans Props and Prediction
New addition Jordan Poole assumed point guard duties in place of the injured Dejounte Murray and turned in a respectable performance, scoring 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting.
Poole’s creativity and confidence should make him an essential component of the Pelicans’ offense moving forward, particularly while Murray recovers.
Trey Murphy III, who took a major leap last season, had a rough start to the new campaign, hitting just 33% of his shots in the opener. The Pelicans will need him to rediscover his rhythm quickly to provide spacing and secondary scoring alongside Williamson.
Defensive ace Herbert Jones also contributed more offensively than usual, adding 17 points and 3 steals.
While his perimeter defense remains elite, he’ll need more help from his teammates if New Orleans hopes to climb out of the defensive cellar they found themselves in last season.
In the frontcourt, depth is already becoming a concern. Second-year big man Yves Missi is questionable for Friday night’s matchup after sustaining an injury in the opener, while Kevon Looney has already been ruled out.
Additionally, Karlo Matkovic sat out the first game and is also questionable for Friday. That could thrust rookie Derik Queen into a much larger role than anticipated, testing the Pelicans’ interior defense and rebounding early in the season.
Forward Saddiq Bey also made his return after missing all of last year with a knee injury and provided valuable minutes off the bench.
The Pelicans clearly have the offensive firepower to compete, especially if Williamson and Poole continue to produce at a high level. However, their defensive issues and mounting injuries present significant challenges.
Facing a young and surging Spurs team headlined by Victor Wembanyama, New Orleans will need to tighten up defensively and control the boards to have any chance of securing their first win of the season.
