NFL Week 7 Injury Report: Key Players

Week 7 remains very busy on the injury front in terms of big names, with quarterback and wide receiver especially affected this week.

In this article each week, we’ll highlight some noteworthy players who have opened the practice week with an injury designation of some sort and offer some quick hits on the expected impact of their absences, if those come to fruition.

NOTE: This article is posted on Fridays. Make sure to check on the updated injury statuses before locking in your NFL Week 7 plays. Good luck!

Quarterbacks

Kyler Murray, Cardinals, QUESTIONABLE (foot)

Murray missed the narrow loss to the Colts in Week 6, and he practiced in limited fashion the first two days of prep for Sunday’s Week 7 clash against the Packers. Per Friday afternoon reports, Murray then worked with the scout team receivers in Friday’s session and is officially questionable versus Green Bay.

If he can’t suit up, Jacoby Brissett, who threw for 320 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Indianapolis while arguably running the offense smoother than Murray mostly has, will draw a second straight start.

Brock Purdy, 49ers, OUT (toe)

While Purdy logged a third consecutive limited practice Friday, he’s been officially ruled out for Sunday night’s game against the Falcons.

Meanwhile, backup Mac Jones has no injury designation and will draw the start versus Atlanta after seemingly putting his oblique and knee issues further in the rearview mirror. The 2021 first-round pick of the Patriots has completed 68.2 percent of his passes with a 2:2 TD:INT while adding 18 rushing yards in the last two games.

J.J. McCarthy, Vikings, QUESTIONABLE (ankle)

McCarthy is set to serve as the emergency third quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Eagles after practicing in limited fashion this week and conceding his ankle sprain isn’t quite yet fully healed.

Carson Wentz, who’s completed 69.0 percent of his passes with a 5:2 TD:INT while adding a 7-29-0 rushing line in the last three games as the starter, will be under center against the team that drafted him second overall back in 2016.

Running Backs

Bucky Irving, Buccaneers, DOUBTFUL (foot/shoulder):

Irving is already trending toward another absence despite the Buccaneers not playing until Monday night at Ford Field against the Lions.

With the second-year back set to miss a third straight game, Rachaad White – who’s gained 157 total yards and three rushing TDs on 38 touches over the first two games of Irving’s absence – will be primed for another start versus a tough Detroit run defense (92.0 RYPG allowed in the last three contests).

D’Andre Swift, Bears, QUESTIONABLE (groin):

Swift practiced in limited fashion both Thursday and Friday, but he told reporters Friday afternoon that he fully expects to play in Sunday’s Week 7 home clash against the Saints. The veteran back is coming off a stellar, season-best performance against the Commanders on Monday night, when he rushed 14 times for 108 yards and added a 2-67-1 line through the air.

Swift would be spelled by rookie Kyle Monangai and Roschon Johnson if he were to have a setback.

* The Packers’ Josh Jacobs is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with a calf injury and an illness, but he was a full practice participant Friday and is expected to play, per beat writer reports.

Wide Receivers

Mike Evans, Buccaneers, QUESTIONABLE (hamstring) / Chris Godwin, Buccaneers, DOUBTFUL (lower leg) / Emeka Egbuka, Buccaneers, QUESTIONABLE (hamstring)

While Evans managed to practice in limited fashion Thursday and took a scheduled day off Friday, both Godwin and Egbuka have missed the first two practices of the week ahead of Monday night’s game against the Lions.

Evans has been reported as trending toward playing, but it appears that the likes of Sterling Shepard, rookie Tez Johnson, Ryan Miller and tight end Cade Otton will have to spell Godwin and Egbuka versus Detroit.

Puka Nacua, Rams, OUT (ankle)

Nacua is already ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars in London after missing practice all week.

The star wideout, who’s drawn 62 targets over the five non-injury-shortened games he’s played this season, is leaving behind a massive workload that Davante Adams, Jordan Whittington, Tyler Higbee and even running back Kyren Williams are expected to mostly absorb.

CeeDee Lamb, Cowboys, QUESTIONABLE (ankle)

Despite his questionable tag, Lamb is expected back for Sunday’s showdown with the Commanders after following up his limited showings Wednesday and Thursday with a full Friday practice.

Following a three-game absence, the star wideout will jump back into his customary No. 1 role, which will undoubtedly lead to a reduction in workload for both No. 2 receiver George Pickens and tight end Jake Ferguson.

Garrett Wilson, Jets, DOUBTFUL (knee):

Wilson’s likely absence due to the knee injury he suffered in Week 6 will allow Josh Reynolds to move into the No. 1 receiver role in Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Rookie Arian Smith and veterans Allen Lazard and Tyler Johnson will be next in the wide receiver pecking order, while promising rookie tight end Mason Taylor could also see a significant boost in volume.

Other notable short-term WR injuries to monitor: Terry McLaurin, Commanders, OUT (quadriceps); Stefon Diggs, Patriots, QUESTIONABLE (chest); Josh Downs, Colts, OUT (concussion); Darnell Mooney, Falcons, QUESTIONABLE (hamstring); Jakobi Meyers, Raiders, QUESTIONABLE (knee); Deebo Samuel, Commanders, QUESTIONABLE (heel); Jauan Jennings, 49ers, QUESTIONABLE (ankle/rib); Ricky Pearsall, 49ers, OUT (knee); Darius Slayton, Giants, DOUBTFUL (hamstring); Noah Brown, Commanders, OUT (IR, groin/knee); Calvin Ridley, Titans, OUT (hamstring)

Tight Ends

Brock Bowers, Raiders, QUESTIONABLE (knee):

Bowers remained out of practice the first two sessions of the week before not only surprisingly returning Friday, but doing so sans a knee brace. With Las Vegas holding a Week 8 bye, Bowers may still be held out of Sunday’s divisional clash against the Chiefs, but it appears he does have a chance to return.

If he remains out, Michael Mayer, who produced a 5-50-1 line on seven targets as the Week 6 starter versus Tennessee, will operate as the No. 1 tight end again.

George Kittle, 49ers, QUESTIONABLE (but slated to be activated from IR) (hamstring):

Friday afternoon brought the news that Kittle will be activated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday night’s game against the Falcons and suit up for that contest.

Positionally, that will mean Jake Tonges will move back into a No. 2 role, and in a more holistic sense for the Niners offense, Kittle could step right back into a voluminous role due to Ricky Pearsall (knee) being ruled out and Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib/shoulder) being listed as questionable.

David Njoku, Browns, OUT (knee):

Njoku missed practice all week and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. The veteran tight end’s absence will create even more opportunity than usual for rookie Harold Fannin Jr., who already is averaging 6.3 targets per game.

Other notable short-term TE injuries to monitor: Zach Ertz, Commanders, QUESTIONABLE (shoulder)
