The North Star State has been getting serious about legalizing sports betting in recent years. The sports betting bill HF 778 made a strong run at passing in 2022 before falling just short. Minnesota lawmakers are at it again, with State Sen. Jeremy Miller (R-Winona) introducing the Minnesota Sports Betting Act 2.0 during the 2024 legislative session.
This bill would give the state’s 11 tribes the ability to offer online and retail sports betting. It would also provide MN horse racing tracks (e.g., Canterbury Park, Running Aces Casino & Racetrack) and sports stadiums the chance to offer sports betting. The Betting Act 2.0 is strictly about sports gambling, with no online casinos/mobile casino games or any other form of online gambling involved.
2024 could finally be the year that online betting passes in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Politicians and gaming interests alike are tired of seeing potential sports betting revenue flow across Minnesota’s borders. A previous bill has even made it past the Minnesota House Commerce Committee and onto the floor.
However, all sides haven’t been able to agree upon what the potential sports betting industry would look like. The Minnesota Indian Gaming Association wants sports betting exclusivity for tribal casinos.
