New York Online Betting

NY online sports betting went live in January 2022, and the New York sports gaming industry immediately became the biggest online sports betting industry in the U.S. New York sports betting apps include some of the most well-known brands in the online sports betting world.

New York sports betting sites include Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and a few others. In addition, new York sports bettors enjoy access to legal mobile sports betting from anywhere within the borders of the Empire State.

New York Sports Betting: Key Facts

Lawmakers introduced the first of many prospective NY sports betting bills in 2009. However, it took another ten years before New York launched in-person sports betting in the Empire State.

The original plan was to allow sports wagers at horse racing tracks, but eventually, lawmakers changed the bill to include casinos. These casinos first had to be built, and lawmakers ultimately brought up sports betting as the state expanded gaming options.

Former Governor Andrew Cuomo supported legal wagering on sports, but he believed it had to be limited to in-person wagering. Voters in New York also backed sports betting legislation, approving a referendum in front of them in 2013.

Retail sportsbooks began opening in 2019, and lawmakers continued to push for legalized mobile options. In addition, Cuomo wanted to add online sports wagering to the state constitution, which at the time prevented legal NY online sportsbooks from launching.

All of that began to change in 2021, as New York legalized sports betting. There are specific rules for an online license, and being tethered to a casino is one of those regulations. Online sports betting launched in New York in January 2022.

Mobile registration is available in the state, allowing sports bettors to sign up for NY sports betting apps from anywhere within state borders. As a result, online sports betting operators like Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, and BetMGM have become popular for NY sports bettors.

New York bettors can look for free bet bonuses, deposit match offers, and risk-free bets from these brands, available through the “Play Now” links in this review.

New York Online Betting Apps

Lawmakers created a plan to legalize online sports wagering in April 2021, and that deal paved the way for mobile sports betting app brands to launch. NY sports betting apps launched in January 2022, in time for Super Bowl LVI.

The New York State Gaming Commission is in charge of regulating mobile wagering. All New York mobile betting apps, and any legal casino gaming in the Empire State, fall under the jurisdiction of the NYS Gaming Commission.

NY online sportsbooks offer legal betting on desktop sites and mobile apps. Apple iOS users can download NY sportsbook  apps through the Apple App Store, while Android device owners can find many sports betting apps at the Google Play store.

The New York Yankees signed FanDuel as an official sports betting partner in April 2022. By far the most popular online option among NY sportsbooks, it appears FanDuel will reign atop the New York market for the foreseeable future.

New York bettors can also place wagers at FanDuel’s retail sportsbook at Tioga Downs Casino.

Resorts World Bet

Resorts World Bet functions as the online gaming arm of Resorts World, a globally renowned hospitality brand.

While many other sportsbooks on this list offer mobile sports wagering in multiple states, Resorts World Bet only operates in New York, at least for now.

Bally Bet

Bally Bet Sportsbook was the last of nine online sportsbooks approved by the New York State Gaming Commission to launch in the Empire State.

Online sports betting extension of the powerhouse Bally Sports media brand, Bally Bet could become a major player in New York and beyond.

One factor that makes New York online sports betting different from other markets is the 51% tax on all sports betting revenue. This could keep some operators from offering promotions seen in other states and might affect the available odds.

Betting on college sporting events featuring teams from New York is also banned in the Empire State. However, sportsbooks can accept wagers on collegiate events in the state as long as no in-state teams are involved.

Several professional sports franchises in the Empire State have signed an official sports betting partner, further expanding the reach of the New York sports betting scene.

List Of Retail Sportsbooks Available In New York

Retail sports are legally available in New York. In addition, the four commercial casinos in upstate New York can offer sports betting and tribal casinos.

Rivers Sportsbook was the first to accept a legal sports wager on July 16, 2019, but other options soon followed. Operators wishing to offer retail sports betting had to partner with a casino before applying and receiving a license.

DraftKings and FanDuel, two of the biggest sports betting operators, entered New York by finding a retail sports betting partner. Land-based sportsbooks in New York include:

  • Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort
  • Del Lago Resort & Casino
  • Point Place Casino
  • Resorts World Catskills
  • Rivers Casino Schenectady
  • Tioga Downs
  • Turning Stone Resort & Casino
  • Yellow Brick Road Casino

One interesting note about retail sports betting in New York is that the state can offer only wagers on sporting events. So, unfortunately, awards shows are off the table, and the NYS Gaming Commission has also not approved esports.

The state taxes retail sports at a rate of 10%, much lower than the 51% for online sports betting revenue.

Daily Fantasy Sports Sites In NY

New York online fantasy sports sites are technically allowed but aren’t explicitly legal.

Lawmakers in New York passed a bill in 2016 that stated that DFS sites were allowed to launch in the state. The state met this decision with plenty of disdain, and there were also several lawsuits filed to take this decision to court.

Online fantasy sports sites have continued offering games in New York, but the legal battle hasn’t gone away. The most significant debate has been over whether or not DFS games are skill or chance, and several judges have weighed in.

Any operator wanting to offer online fantasy sports in New York has been able to apply for a temporary license. The most prominent names from the list include:

The state challenged these games in court for more than five years, making NY online fantasy sports unique. Other states have had similar court battles, but those states resolved most quickly.

DFS Sites That Offer Salary Cap Games

DFS sites became popular nearly a decade ago as DraftKings and FanDuel first burst onto the scene. This industry has changed a lot since then, but the most popular style of DFS games is still the same.

DraftKings and FanDuel specialize in salary cap games, and only a slight variation is seen with each operator. These games require players to draft a team in a particular sport and enter that roster into a tournament or competition.

Other sites such as Fantasy Draft and Yahoo will also have these game styles, but they can’t compete with the two leaders. When it comes to DraftKings and FanDuel, a mobile app is also available.

With the mobile app, customers can sign up for an account at each site and then use all the same features that the player can find online.

Fantasy Player Prop Games In New York

Another popular option for online fantasy sports is what is known as player prop games. These player prop games closely resemble prop betting at the sportsbook, but there is more control over the action.

You don’t see many player-prop games at sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, but you will at Yahoo or Fantasy Draft. These sites have launched in New York even though there isn’t a specific rule to make this form of DFS legal.

Sites such as Monkey Knife Fight will seek a DFS license in New York once this becomes a legal option, and that site will specialize in player prop games.

NY Best Ball Games

There is a new trend with online fantasy sports, which comes in the form of a game called “Best Ball.” Some specific sites in the industry specialize in the best ball games, but none of those options are currently in New York.

The sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel will now have the best ball games available, but they continue to feature salary cap games. Once the state removes the restriction on DFS sports, you can expect to see more operators offering these games.

Best ball games are daily, weekly, or season-long. These games are not similar to sports betting, so DFS players choose to play this game style.

Does New York Have Legal Online Poker Sites?

Online poker has seen the lowest growth of all of the iGaming options in the United States. A big reason for this is that only a handful of operators are authorized to launch in the United States.

Lawmakers in New York will likely introduce an online poker bill in 2022, and this state should see online poker at some time.

Since there are commercial and tribal casinos in New York, any bill would include both groups. This could create a highly competitive online poker market, depending on how many operators choose to launch in the state.

Poker rooms are available throughout New York at commercial facilities, and the state has not taken a strong stance against poker games.

Are Legal Online Casinos Available In New York?

There are 27 casinos and racinos in the Empire State, with 15 of those options being tribal casinos. New York is a state with a pretty long list of casino options but no legal online casino gaming options.

Lawmakers in New York have introduced online casino bills as recently as 2019, but those bills did not gain any real traction. Instead, talk about mobile sports betting has dominated the past two years, and there wasn’t any additional time to look at online casino gambling.

No retail casinos within 100 miles of New York City keep a large state population from any form of casino gambling. This is another reason lawmakers push hard to offer online casino gambling after the successful launch of mobile sports betting apps.

How Do I Know New York Legal Online Sports Betting Sites Are Fair?

If you find an online gambling site licensed with the state of New York, that is your first indication that these sites are fair. There is a long process before these sites can even launch, and operators won’t want to give up that license.

Since New York will be a competitive market for online gambling sites, operators also can’t afford to get a bad reputation. So if users notice that one area isn’t fair, they will move to different places to do the betting.

Who Regulates NY Online Sports Betting?

The New York State Gaming Commission regulates the mobile sports betting industry. The NYS Gaming Commission reviewed and approved license applications before the 2022 launch of New York’s sports betting market.

The Commission also ensures that these sites follow all current gaming laws.

Why Should I Trust Legal Sports Betting Apps?

Online sports betting in New York has been going on for decades as offshore sportsbooks accept players from the state. However, these sites are not legal in New York, and there is no way to regulate what occurs.

These offshore sites have made some people not trust online sports gaming platforms, but things completely change when online legal sports betting sites come into play. Again the New York Gaming Commission regulates mobile sports betting apps, and the Commission must do everything correctly.

Anyone who chooses to play at NY legalized sports betting sites can trust the operators to be fair and do everything legally.

How Do I Get Paid If I Win?

The first step before getting paid is to win money on the sites, which is easily the most challenging step. After you win some money, you will get paid directly from the online gambling site.

New banking options continue to emerge at online gambling sites, and PayPal and ACH/eCheck are now commonly offered. Most of the payment options you find will allow you to receive your money within 48 hours, if not sooner.

New York Sports Teams

NY sports fans often find the state’s beloved sports teams in contention, whether it’s the NFL playoffs, the MLB World Series, the Stanley Cup, NBA Championship, or championships from other sports leagues. New York professional sports teams include:

  • New York Yankees (MLB)
  • New York Mets (MLB)
  • New York Giants (NFL)
  • New York Jets (NFL)
  • Buffalo Bills (NFL)
  • New York Knicks (NBA)
  • Brooklyn Nets (NBA)
  • New York Rangers (NHL)
  • New York Islanders (NHL)
  • Buffalo Sabres (NHL)
  • New York City FC (MLS)
  • New York Red Bulls (MLS)

New York sports betting rules prohibit wagers on New York college sports teams, as well as college sporting events based in New York. While you can’t bet on a New York college team, you can wager on all other college teams and events outside of the Empire State.
