Celtics vs Sixers Predictions – Wednesday, October 22
Philadelphia is coming off a catastrophic 24-58 season—their worst record since 2016. The Big Three of Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey played just 15 games together, going 7-8 in those contests. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong.
The Celtics are in full “survive and develop” mode. They went 61-21 last season but traded away Jrue Holiday (to Portland) and Kristaps Porzingis (to Atlanta) specifically to avoid $180 million in luxury tax penalties. This is a franchise punting on championship contention while Tatum recovers.

Philadelphia 76ers Predictions and Preview
Joel Embiid appeared in only 19 games last season after knee surgery, and right now his status for opening night is genuinely up in the air.
He played 18 minutes in the preseason finale (14 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds), which looked encouraging, but Coach Nick Nurse said it “could still go either way” for Wednesday.
If Embiid sits, this becomes the Tyrese Maxey show. The 24-year-old averaged 26.3 points and 6.1 assists last season despite the chaos, proving he’s a legitimate franchise cornerstone.
Maxey also gets to showcase rookie VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick, who will start on opening night after dropping 26 points in the preseason finale.
Edgecombe’s the real wild card here. The 20-year-old Bahamian guard has drawn comparisons to Jrue Holiday and Derrick White for his defensive instincts, and Nick Nurse is already trusting him in a starting role. That’s not nothing.
Boston Celtics Predictions and Preview
Jaylen Brown is probable despite hamstring tightness in the preseason finale, and he’s expected to carry the primary offensive load.
Brown averaged 26.8 points in recent stretches without Tatum, so we know he can score when given the green light. The question is whether he can do it efficiently for 82 games.
Joe Mazzulla is implementing a major tactical overhaul—Boston ranked 30th in pace last season but jumped to 10th during the preseason.
They’re abandoning their championship-level half-court execution for a chaos-inducing, run-and-gun attack. It’s a “NASCAR pit crew” mentality designed to mask the talent deficit.
Anfernee Simons, acquired in the Holiday trade, provides explosive scoring off the bench after averaging 17-plus points in each of his last four seasons with Portland.
He torched Cleveland for 21 points on 6-of-9 from three in the preseason, showing he can be instant offense.

Check out these Celtics vs 76ers props and picks on Underdog.
Jaylen Brown Player Props – Higher/Lower Than 24.5 Points
With Tatum out, Brown assumes alpha dog duties. He’s averaged 26-plus in similar spots without his wingman. Against a Philly defense that allowed 116.8 PPG last season (21st), he should eat – although Embiid is a big defensive boost for Philadelphia
Tyrese Maxey Player Props – Higher/Lower Than 34.5 PRA
If Embiid sits or plays limited minutes, Maxey becomes the entire offense. This is right about what he averaged on a per-36 basis without Embiid last season. Boston has been playing faster, and their defense has taken a hit without Jrue Holiday. I’d only play this if the big man is out.
Sixers vs Celtics Top Pick – Derrick White Higher Than 19.5 Points
White saw a 4% usage increase without Porzingis, Tatum, and Holiday on the floor last season. He averaged 22-and-change per 36 minutes. If this game stays close, he should hit this number unless he is extremely inefficient.
